Random Shutdown Issue

Hello,

So my nexus 6 is currently plagued with the random shutdown problem. I received the phone in January 2015. I haven't had any major issues until around mid-December 2015 when the first random shutdown occurred. At first they only occurred sparsely (maybe once every week-two weeks). It didn't bother me much because the phone would always reboot when I held down the power button. However, within the past two weeks the shutdowns have been happening daily, and even multiple times in a day; the phone won't even reboot on the first try, it takes multiple attempts to turn it back on.

At first I noticed these shutdowns usually happened when I opened the camera app or went into the settings->wifi. However, it has occurred when I was using other google apps and aftermarket apps. Now they can occur any time I'm on the device. They even happen when the phone is rebooting (this is VERY frustrating). It can get so bad that the only way to restart the device is to connect it to the charger. The only time the phone doesn't randomly shutdown is when it's connected to the charger. While connected it works perfectly.

I haven't performed a factory reset yet (planning to when all my data is backed up). I'm also holding off on doing one because I've been reading about this problem and none of the ones I came across had an issue similar to mine.

I'm running 6.0.1 marshmallow which I received in mid-January 2016.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Mine did this a few times in January but seems to have sorted itself out now. Not sure what caused it though.

It's never happened on my Nexus 6. My Nexus 9 tablet often restarts, maybe twice a week.

UPDATE: My phone is now shutting down on standby. Still the only time the phone doesn't shutdown is while it's connected to the charger. The shutdowns seem to be occurring more frequently now. I did do a factory reset and it didn't help.

Hi,

Have you resolve the issue with your nexus 6, because I have the same problem, I will change my battery because sometimes, when my phone shuting down, I see an battery an symbol of battery when this appear it's impossible to start, If I plug my charge cable the phone start.

Regards,

I have not yet figured out the issue with my device. I should've mentioned this earlier, but it seems that I can actually hear the hardware working inside the phone. I can't hear it when it's charging. Just a thought, but could this be a battery problem that's causing the shutdowns?

All the best,

UPDATE: I replaced the battery with a new one and the phone now works perfectly.
Methods that didn't work: EVERYTHING!!!!!
Battery replacement was straight forward. Just be sure that you align everything correctly before you screw it back together.
So if you're currently dealing with the random shutdowns and nothing works, try replacing the battery.

Best,

I had a couple of random shut downs and just put it down to low battery or some other temporary anomaly because it's been fine for a couple of weeks now and hasn't done it since.

Great news on getting it fixed ;) Where did you get your replacement battery from?

Yes, where did you get the battery from and where did you find the replacement procedure?

I bought the battery off of ebay. I just searched for "nexus 6 battery" or you can search by the part number which is EZ30. If I recall correctly, it only cost me around $14-$15, shipping included.

As for the replacement procedure, I figured out how to do it on my own (I sometimes fix small electronics as a hobby). There are probably videos on youtube showing the replacement method, but here's how I completed it:
1. Remove the SIM card
2. Remove the back cover (it's just held on by some adhesive)
3. Disconnect the old battery ribbon (near the bottom of the phone).
-There's a rubber cover over it that just pops off.
4. Disconnect the volume and power button ribbon from both the phone and secondary ribbon (connected to the side of the phone).
-Also has a rubber cover that pops off.
-There's a white flap that flips up to separate the two ribbons.
5. Unscrew the 22 torx screws (You need a T4 torx head)
-DO NOT unscrew the silver screw next to the power/volume buttons.
6. Carefully separate the plastic frame and the screen/motherboard.
7. Disconnect a small gold tab near the top of the phone.
-There's a small peg you have to pull it off of.
8. Carefully pry up the long black ribbon connection on the battery (part of the QI charger).
9. Separate the plastic frame and battery.
10. Carefully pry under the QI charger (black thing with a bronze circle) and remove it from the old battery.
11. Attach the QI charger to the new battery (just as it was on the old battery) and place it back into the plastic frame.
12. Reattach the plastic frame and screen/motherboard.
13. Reconnect everything aforementioned.
14. Screw in all of the 22 torx screws.
15. Re adhere the back cover and you're done!
-If you need more adhesive, you can buy some off amazon.

Best,
