Rapid battery drain - a recent development

First of all, both my wife and I have the GNEX and we recently bought extended batteries.

A couple days ago (right after we got the extended batteries), my wife's GNEX just started burning through battery insanely fast. Not only that, but her phone seems to stay warm to hot all the time.

My GNEX, however, seems to be working just fine with the extended battery. But hers is just draining like crazy

So, I thought it must be one of two things - 1) the battery is defective OR 2) something buggy with an app or process

Well, we did a battery switch and changed out this afternoon. So far, it seems that it is not the battery but something with her phone.

Therefore I started digging around and the biggest culprit battery-wise for her is her Exchange Email. She has her Hotmail, Gmail, and her school's exchange email all set up. But the exchange is draining 42% of her battery.

The thing is, her standard battery wasn't burning out this fast. So I don't know what to think here.

Not using exchange is not an acceptable solution. Something is weird here that this is a new phenomenon with the extended battery.

Any ideas?

like I have seen in other threads about battery, did you notice the signal is dropping out a lot? That does eat a lot of battery searching for signals.

Try putting the original battery back in her phone and if the battery drain stops you will know it's something about the extended battery causing the drain

Here's a picture of the crazy power drain/recharging her GNEX is going through.

Try having her remove and re-add the exchange account. It looks like something is keeping the phone awake constantly and that will definitely drain battery

Thanks for the tips. She removed and re-added the account this morning so we will see if that works.

As far as testing the battery - I put her battery in my phone and I haven't noticed a problem.

I posted this on the other thread, but check what version of exchange server she has. ICS isn't compatible with exchange server 2003 yet. My email would only partially load ... maybe a month's worth of emails. It kept trying to download emails, the battery drained like hers, and the phone was extremely hot. After conversations with samsung they indicated that there were issues and I wasn't the only one. I disabled email sync but kept the calendar and contacts. This fixed the battery/data problem from exchange for now, but I can't get emails- which really sucks. I've been patiently waiting for an update.

Thanks for the reply!

She removed the account and then re-added it and (after about 8 hours) exchange is now only taking up a small percentage (around 4%) of the battery and her battery life is bit more normalized now.

I'm not sure how to tell if her email is using "exchange server 2003" or not, but hopefully things are going to work how they are supposed to now. It is pretty essential for her to have this email functioning on her phone though, so if it starts to act up again (and the problem is what you have pointed out) she may have some real issues.

It looks like her phone is awake almost all the time. Look at which app is keeping the phone awake and force stop it

its definitely the exchange with hotmail... I had the same issue...
Its not the battery or anything else... something gets out of whack with the exchange and it starts downloading tons of data. go under data usage and see how much exchange used during the time the battery was draining really fast...
Mine had used 500MB in about an hour...
removing the account and then re-adding it worked for me... but i still occasionally have issues.

My daughter and I both have Samsung Galaxy Lite phones. They usually last about 2 to 3 days on a full charge. Yesterday, her phone was at about 71% and mine was at about 54%. Within a couple of hours Friday afternoon (3/6/2015), both our batteries were dead. And I mean they wouldn't even boot dead, even after I plugged in the charger. It wouldn't boot until I left it on the charger after about 15 minutes. I've heard of some firmware updates that have just killed batteries within hours. I'm thinking this is what happened. Too much of a co-incidence that both of our phones died within a couple of hours at the same time. If your phones have been acting up, I'd see if there have been any others who've seen the same thing.
