Re loading data from SD card after factory reset

Just wondering if there are multiple steps involved, or will you be prompted on how to recover your data from SD card. I am wondering because my update centre is showing Android 5.0 ready for download, but I want to back up my data to my SD card and do a factory reset before downloading the update.

What sort of backup app are you planning to use? Does LG have an actual backup app that allows you to restore the phone completely after a reset? The native Android data backup function only backs up certain data, and it's bit vague as to what exactly that encompasses: https://support.google.com/nexus/answer/2819582?hl=en. You could try Helium as well.
