Read texts used to change colour once opened?

When I read text messages on my Galaxy S5, they would change colour to light grey indicating I'd opened and read the text. On my new S9+, this does not happen so I see a list of texts all looking like they have not been read. Can I change this? I have googled this but I just keep getting info on read receipts which is not what I'm talking about...Thanks Nat

if you are using default messaging app try changing the theme to default one in phone settings.
