Recommend me an alternative to the Note 4

Hi there,

I currently own a Note 4 but it's just too big for my front pocket so I want to take a step down in size, without sacrificing in specs. And ideally I want vanilla Android (tired of Touchwiz) and an unlocked bootloader.

So I've been looking at the Nexus 5X, but it's a bit underwhelming since the largest size is only 32gb and there is no microSD slot. Also looked at the MotoX Play, but then that has underwhelming specs and generaly impressions are that it's a bit sluggish? The Nexus 6p would be awesome specs wise, but it's about the same size as the Note 4 which is simply too big. Looked at the LG G4, but it's not really vanilla Android.

So what else am I missing out there?

I'm currently on Verizon and will probably stay on that network as it has the best signal in the areas that I spend the most time (home/work).

I would recommend the 5X but the performance just isn't there yet. So I would say the old nexus 5? Screens still good but battery is meh. Or the new droids, they look good, one has a card slot, and battery should be really good.

So would you say that the 5X might get better with future updates?

If you don't like TouchWiz (my wife loves, I won't use it), you can always install another launcher. (I've been using Nova Launcher for years.) Can't help you with a smaller phone. go into your carrier's store and handle the phones. Find some that feel right in your hand, then look at the specs. I find a Note just about the right size with an Otterbox case, which makes it even larger (and nearly indestructible).
