Hey guys!

Just got my Epic in the mail and coming from the Evo I am in love with this screen and everything is so quick.

I updated right after getting it, performed a hard reset, disabled that DRM junk, and am looking into rooting sometime soon. ^^

Anyways, I'm still a relatively new Android user and was wondering what apps you guys could recommend for me.

A few things in particular that I'm needing:
SMS App
Media Player
Good games
App Killer
Camera App
and any misc productivity/utility apps like JuiceDefender and such?

Also if anyone can spare a few tips for first time setup (like things I should look into disabling for better battery) I'd love you long time.

Any and all recommendations will be greatly appreciated! =]

SMS: Handcent
Media Player: DoubleTwist (it works fine)
A good game: Robodefense and any ROMs having to do with any of the emulators
App Killer: There's one built in, but you could try Advanced Task Killer
Camera App: VIGNETTE VIGNETTE VIGNETTE
Misc.- JuiceDefender, speedtest.net, any benchmark test, locale, doggcatcher, pandora, etc.

Hope you enjoy the Epic! :)

I'd also recommend mVideoPlayer. The Galaxy S is the only current android phone that has native support of mkv and mVideoPlayer allows mkv files with embedded subtitles to play. If you watch anime this is the only video player I've found where I can drag and drop 720p mkv files and it will play them perfectly with working subtitles.

Battery indicator pro. I've tried about half a dozen battery status apps and like this one the best. Puts the percentage in your status bar and isn't a drain. There's a free version too. Also Tiny Flashlight + LED is best light app I've found for the epic

For the app killer use the built in one. The task killers on the market cause more issues then they solve.

Agreed...

+1 for the Tiny Flashlight... and I use the free version of Battery Indicator and it's perfect, so that one gets a +1 too! The stock battery indicator on the Epic is so useless!

Thanks everyone for the tips!
I have downloaded all of these~ =]

If anyone else has some random gems that you think are just awesome apps please let me know! ^^

Astro File Manager Perfect for file management... built in ZIP / UNZIP functionality, Cut-Paste-Move-Copy made easy, and lots of management features... I finally downloaded it about a week ago and wonder what took me so long... :)

Dolphin Browser HD My browser of choice... tabs, add-ons (like Firefox) and an overall better web browsing experience (MUCH better than stock) with lots of features and customizability...

Hope this helps!

below are some of my personal recommendations, Most are free that have more functions rich in full paid versions

SMS App: Handcent: Hands down the Best most feature rich SMS app
Media Player: there are many I like Meridian & Mixzing the best they support swipe to advance tracks. meridian seems to be more feature rich.
Other Media Apps: Pandora, Mvideo player, iHeartradio, Doggcatcher podcatcher, Google listen podcatcher. Seesmic: feature rich free twitter client
Good games: Angry Birds.. Fling vengeful birds at greedy swine The Moron test is great to entertain friends buy .99 full version well worth it, keep you busy and get lots of laughs. Talking Tom: repeats what you say in a funny voice, Bonsai Blast and paper toss are my top time wasters. Reversiothello, like game logic and thinking..
Other non Game fun Apps: The Swartz; Star wars light sabers... Google SkyMap: point it up at the sky and it maps out starts and constellations.. my kids love this one. Kids paint
App Killer: stock task killer As Some have already mentioned (Long press on Home key)
Camera App: Picsay my favorite photo editing apps

ProductivityUtilities:
RingDroid: Ringtone app create and edit your own ringtones
Smart Measure: Measures distance bubble, height..
ConvertPad: Unit converter
Google talk: should already be installed
Google Shopper ,
Shop Savvy: can do research by scanning Barcodes, also enables QR code reading.
Barcode scanner QR code reader and barcode scanner
Wikitude: Augmented reality App.
Layard: another augmented reality App
DropBox: view files from any remote PC on your mobile
Quadrant standard: speed and graphics test on your phone
Shootme: enables screen shot capture
Connect Bot: Terminal emulator
Astro file manager is nice.. but i find stock file manager works just as good.

And one of the best for last.
Launcher pro replaces stock TouchWiz. I downloaded this so I could change the default docked icons.

My advice on getting started is to read the help sections, & tips & tricks sections of the Android forums

I have really enjoyed Itching Thumb. As a former WebOS owner I loved the cards. This is the closest that I have found to it on Android.
