I was wondering why I couldn't get into recovery mode to do a clear cache partition and I stumbled across a video which confirmed that you need to have the phone connected to a PC with a USB cable in order to now do this.
Does anyone know why this change has been made? It seems to me to be pretty impossible to accidentally press vol up and power buttons simultaneously because it's such a conscious act, lol.

It's there to prevent malice not accident. It's pretty easy to just pick someone's phone up and factory reset it, especially if you're stealing it. Apparently this is to make things like that a little harder.
