Recurring battery issues

So I bought a G3 F460 a little less than an year ago. I love the device and the only downsides for me has been below a very battery life and random heating issues sometimes. I was stoked to see the Koreans dishing out a spare battery. Little did I know how soon they would both fizz out.

So about 3 months back my device started having weird boot loop issues and after struggling to troubleshoot and a factory reset, I came to the conclusion that it was the battery which might have malfunctioned since it worked while plugged in to the charger.

I cursed my luck for getting a bad quality battery and blessed LG Korea for giving a spare. Now three months later, same **** again. Same boot loop with the new battery. Only way to run the device is go keep it wired.

Can anyone help with a solution or share their experience? Is it bad battery quality or is it the last update screwing the performance of the battery? Would it happen again with a new battery too ?

Welcome to Android Central! I'd be wondering more about some app you've installed that might be causing some instability (hence the bootloops). Show us some battery stats. Charge up to 100%, then let it drain to 20-30% with normal usage, without charging in between. Then show us:

1. The main Settings>Battery screen.
2. The fullscreen battery graph screen (which shows Awake time and Cell Signal Strength).
3. The Screen category (to see total Screen On time).
4. The Cell Standby category, if present (to see Time Without Signal).

Here are the screenshots.

Battery was draining very quickly after full charge when I was using it for browsing. But that slowed down when I reduced my usage.

As you can see here when battery was at around 50%, it again went into the boot loop and suddenly the battery went down to 27%

I used the phone normally and got 2 charge cycles without the bootloop. Today once again t went into boot loop at 37%

It sounds like the problem has more to do with the bootloops than with the battery. Try Safe Mode first, in case a 3rd party app is causing instability: https://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-11934. If the problem goes away in Safe Mode, then you'll have to uninstall apps one by one until the bootloops go away, since there's no easy way to pinpoint the culprit. If the problem doesn't go away in Safe Mode, then you should consider a factory reset.

Thanks for the response Diddy.

Can you share your reasons for believing it is an app causing boot loops ? How do you explain the sudden negative spike in battery ?

Couple of added things. When it goes into boot loops, the loop can only be exited by powering to a charger. Sometimes it starts with the same battery level as it went yo the loop with, else sometimes it dives down. This happened before with my last battery as well and it stopped for the last 3 months with my new battery.

I'm just wondering if an app is causing instability at a basic level, thereby causing a bootloop. When the phone is in the bootloop, it's possible it's using more energy to try to boot up normally, such that when you finally get it out of the bootloop, the battery level is significantly decreased.

Normally, I would suspect the battery, but you already said the same thing happened with a different battery. Maybe it's a coincidence--you could always try a 3rd battery and see if it still happens.

So the best way to find out is to do a factory reset and if the problem still persists, then we can safely say it is a battery problem ? Do you reckon I should also delete app files on my memory card and device storage to give it a clean start ?

Well, another possibility to consider is corrupted firmware. In this situation, a factory reset wouldn't help, because it doesn't change or reinstall the firmware. I think the easiest troubleshooting steps to do right now would be (1) Safe Mode, and if things persist then (2) try another battery.

It's getting worse every day. So I booted to safe mode after a charge and yet it went into a boot loop. I guess I will buy a new battery. I am only conerned if I will have to buy a new battery every third month.

The boot loop occurring in Safe Mode narrows it down a little. You've excluded 3rd party apps. That leaves the battery, the firmware, or the motherboard. If a 3rd battery does the same thing, then it's one of the other two problems, which would be tougher to fix.

Same exact issue with mine. Its pretty much useless right jow, im still waiting for the battery ive ordered on amazon.ca. The only way to stop loop is to charge it. Ive rebooted (factory reset) 3 days ago and it still does the boot loop, but once its plugged in its fine. A lot of people recently are having this issue same with ppl with z3 sony xperias once they updated to lollipop. I really need my g3 now cus i dont wanna use my z5 outdoors yet without a case. Ive already got a deep scratch on my new phone =(
