That's a great price, although I think that's the original version with the worse battery life. If I saw the Samsung Chromebook at that price, I might jump at it.

Yup. It's the one with the 320GB HD. The 16GB SSD version is going for $179.99 refurbished I think.

I like that the RAM and hard drive are user-replaceable on the C7.

That's a good point. 320 GB HD isn't a bad thing to have either.

I traded my 2012 Nexus 7 for the Acer C7, couldn't be happier.

I may later switch out HDD for SSD, mostly to help battery and no longer have heat.

What good is a hard drive on a chrome book.

Also wondering what does a chrome book offer over a normal notebook with chrome installed on it.

Those are both serious questions.

Although Chromebooks are certainly intended for people who store things in the cloud, it's still nice to have a drive to store larger items locally, like movies, for example.

Advantages of a Chromebook over a normal notebook with Chrome include (1) the Chromebook is lighter, (2) it turns on in a couple of seconds, (3) it is much less susceptible to malware, (4) it uses less power (and therefore doesn't need a fan), (5) no Microsoft Patch Tuesdays.

I'm not saying Chromebooks are overall better than conventional laptops--these are just some of the advantages. There are, of course, some pretty significant disadvantages as well. It all depends on what you need.

Spot on.

Basically, if you can do everything you need within the Google ecosystem (Gmail, Drive/Docs, etc.), a Chromebook is a great fit. The extra hard drive space gives you some flexibility against the "always-connected" sort-of-requirement that Chromebooks have.
