Release date for Lollipop?

Nope. I don't even think Google has announced an official release date. And Motorola simply has never pre-announce a date for the 2013 Droids to receive any update.

The 2012 Droids received KitKat in May this year. That's probably a decent guess for when the 2013 Droids will receive Lollipop. Maybe a little sooner, but probably not much. It's likely that the 2014 X, the 2014 G, the 2014 Droid, the 2013 X, and the 2013 G and E will get Lollipop before the 2013 Droids do. Maybe the Droids will before the E, I guess we'll see when it happens...

I bet the update will come much faster than it did for the 2012 Droids. Keep in mind that the 2013s are nearly vanilla, and part of their appeal was the promise of faster updates. I would expect the update within a couple months (gut feeling).

*edit* Also keep in mind that the '13 Droids are nearly identical to the '13 Moto X, so there's very little additional software development and testing needed.

Here is what Motorola has said in their blog post about the update path for their phones.

The Official Motorola Blog: Nexus 6 from Google and Motorola: More Android. More screen. More everything.

With the relevant part being:

"Once Android 5.0 L is officially released, we intend to bring this latest upgrade to many of our other Motorola devices, as well. This includes Moto X (1st and 2nd Gen), Moto G (1st and 2nd Gen), Moto G with 4G LTE, Moto E, Droid Ultra, Droid Maxx and Droid Mini. We're still working out the details on timing and the upgrade depends on our partners' support so stay tuned to our software upgrades page for the latest and greatest."

Thank you for that. All I was able to find offered similar statements:

Here's every device getting Android 5.0 Lollipop so far

Android 5.0 Lollipop update schedule: Find out when and if your smartphone will get it : PERSONAL TECH : Tech Times

"Motorola announced that Android 5.0 Lollipop would be coming to the Moto X (1st generation and 2nd generation), Moto G (1st generation and 2nd generation), Moto G with 4G LTE, Verizon Droid Ultra, Droid Maxx, and Droid Mini in the near future."

I hope it's sooner than later, I'm anxious to find out if the upgrade stretches battery life out again. Mine has noticeably lost capacity lately.

Again, just a reminder of the KitKat update for Moto the past year (from memory, I may have some of these details wrong):

- The Moto X gets 4.4 in November - fast, and, surprisingly, on Verizon first
- The Droids get it in late December. The update bricks some phones, so is stopped
- By now, both 4.4.1 and 4.4.2 have been released.
- The Moto G gets the 4.4.2 update in January
- The Droids finish getting 4.4 in January
- The Moto X gets 4.4.2 in February
- The 2012 Droids get 4.4.2 in May
- Motorola works on 4.4.2 for the 2013 Droids, but it gets delayed by a radio update in May for a rare roaming issue for customers who travel to parts of Canada
- Google quickly announces 4.4.3 and then 4.4.4 in May and early June to patch some emergency issues, including Heartbleed
- The Moto X gets 4.4.3 in June
- The 2013 Droids finally get 4.4.4 in July, followed by 4.4.4 for the Moto X

Again, hopefully there won't be issues like this, but I really do suspect that a major upgrade like 5.0 will require some patches, probably at least as many as KitKat, and I think they'll wait until it's stable before they think about upgrades for the 2013 Droids. It could be that I'm being too pessimistic, but I still think it's realistic to expect the first 5.0 update in the four to six month timeframe for our phones and hope for better.
