Remove Clockwork Mod Recovery/Custom Rom loading issues

hi all before i flash my new phone to custom roms i wanted to be sure i can return to stock.

I rooted with SuperOneClick yesterday
installed rom manager
installed clockwork recovery
did nandroid backup
did some texting etc to test out stock firmware
and was getting ready to flash a new firmware(chevy,etc)
i then tried to go into clockwork recovery by doing power and X and i get a white triangle with a exclamation point.

I read as per this that is because clockwork mod not installed but that doesnt make sense as i go into rom manager by doing a battery pull and see clockwork mod was installed. when i install again and go into recovery mode by hitting button it works, but by manual rebooting it doesnt work.

So i followed a guide i found online downloaded a FRG22 update put on root of sd card, using the rom manager got to recovery redidd that file

Downloaded a terminal emulator type SU and got permission denied which means root was removed,

my questions are:

1. why was i getting the yellow exclamation when doing recovery when clockwork mod was installed.

2.how can i be sure now/how do i remove that clockwork mod is removed from bootloader in case i need to return phone to VZW?

1. IF you used ROM manager to flash a recovery, I'm betting you used the most current version. Quite a few folks have run into this before and have had decent success using an older version which is 2.5.0.1.
