Working - Remove SprintID from Launcher - Launcher2.apk

This apk will replace the SprintID button on the Froyo launcher with the stock browser button. This was my first foray into Android .apks. Enjoy!

The launcher is attached to the thread. You'll want to use adb to install. Put Launcher2.apk in your tools folder, adb remount, and then give it the old "adb push Launcher2.apk /system/app".

Update: On second thought, I can't remount through adb on my phone so you'll want to get a terminal editor to install the apk. Steps are as follows once in terminal (this assumes that you have put the apk on the root of the sd card):

su
mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
cat /sdcard/Launcher2.apk > /system/app/Launcher2.apk
mount -o remount,ro -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
reboot

Where was/is the Sprint id button? I just chose the clean id and cleared the notifications without installing it. Hope that is not an issue later, haven't seen the button at all. Then under application management, I kinda sorta accidentally on purpose might have deleted the Sprint id!?! But, I'm no expert, and have no idea how to do any of this stuff without printing out the forums and going line by line... I'm just saying.

I assume you rooted the phone first. ;)

He's talking about the SprintID button on the launcher (right hand side) and deleting an application won't remap the launcher.

Also you cannot delete sprintID in the applications > manage applications. The apk and odex for that reside in a read only directory system/app. The only way to remove the sprintID apk and odex are to root your phone and use an application such a root explorer, mount as r/w, then remove the apk and odex. Or you could use ADB to rm

Cheers!

Correct, this post is regarding the SprintID button on the launcher.

VERY IMPORTANT: BACKUP EXISTING FILES BEFORE DELETING THEM!

OTA UPDATES WILL FAIL IF YOU DO NOT HAVE THE ORIGINAL FILES!

Assumes rooted phone.

Once you have your backup, first remove /system/app/W_Installer.apk (SprintID)

Now, for your launcher
http://files.mysticmidnight.net/zefie/files/cell/LG670/Launcher2_NoSprintID.zip

I have tested this and am using it now.

And as always, every time you replace the launcher, you need to manually re-add your widgets.

there may be a few minor quirks that do not effect usability. So far all I have found is that when you open the 'app drawer', it does not do the fade transisition.

Edit: Apparently if you install and use a 3rd party launcher, like LauncherPro, you can remove W_Installer.apk and remove SprintID without any recourse.

Are you saying that the fade transition doesn't work with the launcher I posted at the top of the thread? I'm fairly certain it works on all of the handsets I've tried it on.

no it doesn't work with the one i posted but mine fully removes sprintid

mine is pulled from a hero rom. i don't remember which one. i found a bunch of launchers that worked, with fade, but the app drawer was skewed and off the screen. shame too coz originally i had one with 7 screens lol

Haha, I'll take a look between mine and the stock launcher from the Nexus one this weekend to see what I can do. I'm sure I can get the SprintID link out of the menu.

I did root it, I just chose the clean ID, put off install and rooted my optimus. But I don't recall seeing the button initially and I do not have the icon now. Could it be because I got my phone from wirefly? I have no such icon, anywhere. When I went under manage applications, I was able to uninstall SprintId. Hopefully, this will not do something terrible to me later. Did anyone else get the freebie from wirefly? Or did you all go through Sprint? I ordered the phone on the 7th, think maybe they installed the software rather than sprint? Would that even make a difference?

Ok, here's what happened to me...i was using the terminal editor and going to flash it that way. Well i pulled the cable from the pc 1/2 way thru and my phone rebooted...and was basicaly bricked at the android load screen. 5 hours and numerous wipes and numerous attempts to reroot my phone later, i was trying to root it one last time before i went to bed. I got fed up w/ it so i said "phones a paperweight, one last shot at this!" so i was in my platform-tools folder in cmd and typed in "adb shell" came up w/ the $ sign...and said "that's what i got in the editor!" so i typed in su and my phone recognized the superuser request, so i clicked accept, and went on to copy and pasting the prompts at the top (hitting enter after each line) typed "reboot" hit enter...and phone rebooted! i prayed and crossed my fingers and next thing you know...MY LAUNCHER WAS BACK! AND IT WAS THE STOCK FROYO LAUNCHER! i can now use my phone like i had been, and with TitaniumBackup, i got ALL my apps back and my phone is just how i wanted it! so it may be time to flash a rom (wanting to try ThundeROM) but i'm now afraid (to sum point) of screwing up my phone again.

Flash the replacement recovery rom

It is not hard to do if you follow the instructions carefully

Once you flash that, you can make a full backup of your existing system as it is

That way if you don't like Thunder ROM or screw something else up,
you can always revert back to your full system backup.
