"Removing" vs. Closing Apps on ICS

So much has been made of the swipe gesture to remove an application from the recent apps view but does that action actually close the applications?

It isn't just a recent apps drawer, but also doubles as a task manager so when you swipe it out, it kills the app as well.

I'll have to see if I can find it but I thought I had read/heard that the swiping just removed it from view. I believe it was one of the hands-on videos. But if it surely closes the apps and you aren't forced into other steps to do so, then that makes me happy in my pants!

im not sure if i like this. before i never worried about what was running with GB. now with ICS i have to obsessively click on the running apps button and swipe apps closed all day??????????

I'd imagine the functionality of GB will still be there, but that this new feature will give you some control over it, rather than just letting the OS do its thing. And also, of course, to give you a quick little "hub" of apps to jump back into, if need be.

I think the hands-on video was either from Engadget or The Verge but whoever did that hands-on updated their article to state they were misinformed by being told that it just showed recent apps and didn't double as a task manager when it actually did.

I'm running ICS on my SGS and it definitely DOESN'T double as a task manager.

Can you explain how you came to that conclusion ?

I'm using a third party task manager and when I swipe an app from the ICS "multi-task view", the process disappears in the task manager.

Yeah, now that I've noticed, Google themselves call it a recent apps button haha

So how do you actually "CLOSE" an app. Do you really have to go into the apps in settings under running and tell it to "stop" everytime? I thought the app switcher closed when you swiped it but apparently it doesn't?

It does something though... ie when I have Facebook and it's still stuck trying to get my GPS location, I press and hold home and swipe Facebook away, and immediately the GPS icon goes away.

Maybe it doesn't kill everything but it does kill something lol

I have read that it does some take management but doesn't completely remove the app from memory.

On ICS 4.0.1 here on my Galaxy Nexus it does kill the app and therefore is quite dangerous depending on the app, wish they had a swipe left to dismiss and swipe right to kill or visa versa.
