reset before os update

Is it nessesary to do a factory reset before I update to kit Kat or is it just personal preference?

No--if anything, people tend to do the reset after the update, to clear out any remnants of the previous version that might be hanging around the system cache.

I normally do resets when the update is for a major version. If it's minor I don't do it.

What B.Diddy said is some good advice. I too have gotten in the habit of hard resetting my devices after major updates if i have any issues.
