Resizing Photos for wallpaper

Can anyone tell me how to properly resize photos from the gallery to fit properly as your wallpaper? The blocks that pop up are impossible to manipulate beyond a small area. At least I have not been able to figure out how to. I know their are apps out there, but I was hoping that someone would have a solution within the stock app. As always, thanks for any help.
