So I made a boo boo. I tried to update to AOKP milestone 3. I didn't wipe everything because I figured I was just updating to a new rom version, not changing rom varieties.

Well, now I get stuck in the AOKP boot loop. I tried to get into recovery (CWM) and it's not there. I guess they left the recovery backup file in place, which overwrites CWM. Super.

Then I tried to use ADB, but I keep getting waiting for device. When I look in device manager I just see my phone as "Samsung mobile USB CDC composite device." It's not "unknown." I had previously unlocked and rooted from this laptop, so it should have all the drivers still.

I tried to use Odin to install CWM. I used 7-zip to wrap it in .tar and load it as a PDA, but Odin just crashes. I tried to push a factory image, but it still crashes. I guess this is the same device issue.

So what the what? I know this should not be permanently bricked (I do at least see the AOKP boot animation and the PC recognizes something and I can boot into fastboot), but I'm out of tricks. Help is appreciated if you have any advice.

When I boot into fastboot (power + volume down) I see:

Odin Mode in red in top left.
Start next to power (just begins the boot loop)
Downloading....
Do Not turn of target
OMAP-samsung hw information.
There is no "fastboot" mentioned!

So it looks like I am in Odin mode, not fastboot mode for some reason. Alas, Odin crashes. (v3 1.85).Win 7 64 bit. Truecrypt installed today, FWIW.

fast boot is power +volume up and down. Fast boot is in the bootloader

Have u tried to install the factory files with Odin? There's two of them.

I guess I was not thinking right last night. I got into recovery with volume up+down.. Thanks for the reminder. Did a factory reset, installed AOKP M3, then GAPPS and it booted up.

I tried to install the 4.0.2 toro image in .tar format, but it crashed. I didn't try any others as it also crashed when I zipped CWM into a .tar and tried to install that.

I am getting almost immediate reboots as soon as it starts. It's not doing a fulll wipe because I still see my wallpaper and widgets and I didn't have to log in again.

Doing another wipe and install. I have a nandroid to roll back to, also. If that still fails, i'll rolll back to stock. If that fails, I'll return it :)

Status update:
Error while restoring /data!

Loaded an old nandroid back to 4.0.2 rooted and unlocked. It's just spinning at the boot screen. Not rebooting, just won't stop with the stock boot animation.

For future reference wugs has a great step by step method for making sure your drivers get installed right. Tried it last night.

Do you happen to have a link? I can't find that user in the AC member list. I would love to nail these down, though.
