Restoring with titanium/nandroid

I have a novice level question about restoring from a wipe. Let's say hypothetically I wipe my phone completely. If I wanted to restore my phone completely and totally the way it was would I use a nandroid backup first, a titanium backup first or both? I'm under the impression that a nandroid backup restores everything completely as it was. Therefore titanium wouldn't even be necessary would it?

Nandroid backup will restore all your data... from the time you did the backup... ROM, Data, and cache.

Ok thanks, so just going back to my same ROM with the nandroid would be sufficient. Seems like titanium would be redundant in this case.

I don't use Titanium, but have found a good use for MyBackup Root... using MyBackup Root I can backup a couple apps like Angry Birds Rio, and after I flash a different ROM I can restore all my data from just those apps... otherwise I think Titanium is just too big and complex for average users needs.

Will MyBackupRoot restore stored folders from Folder Organizer. The only thing that nags me about wiping is I have to create my folders again afterwards.

TitaniumBackup is useful when wishing to quickly set up a NEW ROM with all of your apps on previous ROM & app data.

nandroid=backs up your ROM "A" as is (screens, layouts, alarms)
make a backup with TitaniumBackup (no system data!)
flash a new ROM "B"
restore TitaniumBackup into ROM B to get back all of your apps & app data (from ROM A") (this negates waiting for the apps to download from the android market)
don't like this new ROM "B"? flash your nandroid A Backup

so both a Nandroid & Titanium Backup have a useful place :)

I'm confused....

I would to run a new version of a custom rom. I just made a nandroid backup of everything but also have Titanium Backup...so I should just run a backup of the Apps only?

So from CW, do I know just wipe data, cache, davlik, and install v5 of the rom...then install Titanium Backup (since I wiped data, right?) and restore just apps or restore system data too???

I have a Samsung EPIC, but I think the backup/restore process is all the same.

Thanks.

When going from rom to rom its best to restore app and app data only. System data can cause problems.
When I change roms I do a Nandroid back up, then wipe data, wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache and format system. I then install my rom. First thing I do on the new rom is download titanium back up and restore all my apps and app data.

You do know that Folder Organizer have a backup option in the settings, also Titanium Backup save the settings for the app also...... I prefer Sprite Mobile because it allows you to restore a individual app verse restoring all apps like MyBackup Pro.

To the OP: A Nandroid is a full image backup. it's great for doing a FULL restore to certain point in time. Backup apps like Titanium and MyBackup are more for backing up specific data that you want to carry over and transfer to new ROMs when you install them.

The stickied guide linked to in my signature has a nice tutorial on using backup apps and what specifically you should be backing up when installing new ROMs.

Titanium Backup will

Does titanium back allow to you to save browser book marks when switching roms?

I don't think so, but MyBackup does

How do you restore phone contacts after flashing then?

Back them up with MyBackup, or use a sync app, like Verizon's Backup Assistant. (For non-Google contacts)

If I rename a nandroid will it still work? (have you tried it?)

Yes.
The one thing to look for with nandroids is that you should use the same version of CWR to restore as you did to create a backup. So avoid updating CWR if there is a chance you will want to revert to a recent Nandroid in the near future.

Darn it! I just did that yesterday. I thought I read in the app info that it would work with previous versions. If I try one to check will it bork my phone?

I have some saved from the new app and some from the older one.

Edit: actually I only updated rom manager. The cwr version is the same so I assume I'm ok?

Well, the worst that could happen is your restore job just fails (which has happened to me for this reason), and you have to start over again.

Updating ROM Manger is different than updating CWR. CWR updates are done THROUGH ROM Manager. And even if you do need to go back to an older version of CWR, you can do that through ROM Manager.

If you're not sure, why not just make a nandroid now?

Now, this is just my own personal opinion, but here goes... Nandroid backups are FULL IMAGE backups. That means that they are great for creating "checkpoints" that can be used to easily revert back when testing ROMs, kernels, mods, etc. However, because they contain all your apps and data based on a particular snapshot in time, these nandroid images also grow "stale" very quickly.

I generally make a nandroid about once every two weeks, even if I'm not planning on making any modifications to my phone. Why? Because I also delete any nandroid older than about 2 weeks. After about that time, the data and the app versions contained on the image are outdated enough that it would almost make more sense to just start from scratch.

Seriously, If you *really* wanted to go back to an old version of Froyo you ran months ago, you'd have a much easier time installing the ROM from scratch and restoring saved data from your current ROM than you would actually restoring a nandroid from that long ago. Trust me. If you nandoid is older than a few weeks, you might as well just delete it...it's never going to be worth going back to.

How do you restore phone contacts after flashing then?

Before flashing a new rom, export all your contacts to gmail. Then they will restore automatically from the cloud.

If you forgot to do this and have no contacts, make a nandroid backup. Then restore a backup from when you did have contacts and export your contacts to gmail. Finally, restore your new backup.
