Retrieve and send MMS without manually turning on data

HTC One Remix/M8 Mini
I recently switched from Google Hangouts to Google Messenger and now I have to manually turn on data to send or retrieve MMS when before it would turn on and off automatically. Is there any way I can fix this back or do I have to back to Hangouts?

Either Hangouts, or use Tasker to turn on wifi when Messaging is visible (I turn on GPS when Maps is visible).
