Retrieve sms history

I have a galaxy s3 and I wonder if there is a way to get old sms messages back. They seem to be deleted and replaced with new messages. For example, I can read messages from 18 June and that seems to be the oldest. Is there a way to go back further?

Have a look at your Gmail inbox on a pc. You may have SMS and Call Logs synced and available on the left. Your Google account settings sync these by default.
Check the inbox first. You can sync the old sms back with master sync on in General - Accounts - Google - touch account name.
