Return Nexus 4 to darker Holo theme post KitKat? Possible?

Well, just got my Nexus 4 upgraded to KitKat and frankly the bright white backgrounds hurt the hell out of my eyes (I have bad eyes) especailly on the formerly nice and dark holo-themed Dialer app. Is there any way to get the lovely and easy to look at grey/black and blue holo theme back for the dialer? This new stark white nonsense that's been forced on me actually causes me physical pain. I know this won't be a problem for many, but I just want my dark theme back if anyone can point me in the right direction

The only way past this is to download a third party dialer app. Many have themes.

Was really hoping for another answer... do you have any suggestions for dialer apps? I can't imagine why Google would get people used to a very dark theme and just randomly decide to change it completely like this.

then how are u using the thousands of apps which are white holo themed??
although people open it often, they spend less time on it. so!!!

I actually try to avoid any apps I can that are bright white with no skin options. I went with android specifically because of the lovely cool blue and grey theme that has now been unceremoniously ripped away from me. If I must use a bright starkly contrast app, I need to turn down the brightness on my phone, which gets annoying after a while.

Like I said, I realize this won't be a problem for most people, but for the life of me I dont understand why Google would make so drastic a color scheme change with no basic skin options. Just seems like change for the sake of change.

I'm with you, don't like the bright white theme. I have perfectly good eyes, but prefer a darker theme, specially in dark, not well lit areas. Just glaring to open the dialer in a dark room, lights up the whole place.

I have the same problem. Just upgraded my nexus 4 to KitKat and can't stand the bright white theme. Please help!

I don't see a way out for a good stock dialer unless you're ready to factory reset back, or root and get a custom ROM.

I'm with you guys: I choose apps based on whether I can have them dark.

When I was looking at Play store dialers before deciding the stock 4.3 was best, Dialer One (Russian) and Phone Book ConTacTs (Japanese) stood out as my favourite dark stand-ins for dialer and contacts.

I'm still on 4.3; one look at the 4.4 screenshots and I lost all update lust for KitKat.

I wouldn't be able to deal with iOS 7 at all.

Has anyone filed a suggestion bug with Android, or is the dialer considered a Google-only implementation?
