Returned EVO Before 30 Days

First off I had very high expectations for this phone. 4.3" display, 720p Vid Rec, 4g!...this phone advertises as the mother of all phones. After a couple weeks of usage I decided to return the phone and wait for a better built device. Why? Heres the reasons:

1) 4.3" display - has a grounding issue that affects touch sensitivity

2) 720p camera - Extremely compressed to the point where SD looks better than HD. I know it's not suppose to replace my 5d Mark II but it should look and sound better than standard def.

3) 4g - This wasn't HTCs fault but rather Sprint. 4g coverage is extremely limited now and I feel like $10 a month (for the hardware or coverage...whatever Sprint wants to say that $10 is for) is a bit unfair. That's $120 extra a year...over half the amount most people pay for a smart phone out of pocket. I should be able to see where that $10 is going but I didn't.

4) 30fps Capped - This doesn't really affect me as I don't play games but apparently alot of people are pissed about this so I feel like it should be mentioned for those who are expecting an official fix and may never get it.

5) Uploading Video - Ok so I shot some footage on my Evo and I'd like to send it while on the go. What's this? "Waiting for Wifi Connection"???!! You have got to be kidding me. It's a given that phones should be able to send content including video away from Wifi! 3g is faster than some peoples internet at home!!! Come on!!

6) Light leakage - I've owned the HTC Mogul and Touch Pro and never had light leaking through the front of my phone. Why take a step back on build quality? I feel like HTC needs to slow it down when it comes to launching phones and make sure they are releasing quality products. At least they don't build cars!


So now I'm back to using my overclocked Palm Pre. It's fast, has Web OS, uploads content while I'm on the go, and makes waiting for a snag free "Evo" a little less painful. It was hard returning my phone. I love all the google apps, the speed of the phone, the display, but the issues were just too big for me. Once those issues are resolved I will have that $150 upgrade still ready to make a purchase. Will you?

I also went back ot the Pre. Better phones will come. The main reason I got rid of mine was the display.

Don't be fooled by the size. I can see color banding and some really washed out colors on it. I then learn it was only 16 bit which is 65K colors. When I look at the Pre screen which is 24 bit 16.7 million colors the difference was tremendous. Other devices will come with better displays than this outdated display HTC used.
 
Thinking about going back to my Hero, but only because of the battery and the phone feels a tad to big. I have 8in+ hands and it feels big.
 
Well, the reasons you posted above are a bit meh.
I understand the 720p recording...

... but the only thing I'm worried about is the lack of GPU? I don't know much about it, but games don't run like they run on my Pre.

I think it looks far sharper than my iPhone did....Thats really the only comparison I can make, never had a touch screen before that.
 
My thoughts on these issues ...

Grounding issue with the display, I don't have this, clearly doesn't affect all EVOs.

Yes the "high-definition" video is a joke. They shouldn't even be allowed to call it "HD" since it's so compressed.

$10 extra a month sucks but I'll deal. 4G coverage and speeds will get better. 4G wasn't a primary selling point for me, I would have gotten the phone even if it was only 3G.

I loved my Pre back can't go back, screen is too small, and no kickstand! :)
 
I returned my phone as well. The reasons were...

1. Unresponsive screen/grounding issue
2. Slight lifting of the screen in the lower left hand corner

Minor annoyances at this point but was concerned with these issues becoming progressively worse over time.

Battery was actually excellent. I could go all day with moderate use no problem even after leaving it unplugged overnight after a full charge.

I've gone back to my G1 for now and plan to wait to see if they can get a handle on some of the inconsistent quality issues. I am hoping they can as I really like the features/design/UI of this phone.
 
I get it. The Evo isn't polished yet, in a year people will love their Evos and I'm sure there will be some bad rep as well, from this time right now when everyone is jumping in. The phone isn't even two weeks old yet ya know? It took the pre MONTHS before it became a viable device.

The Evo, like any other bleeding edge flagship style handset, will have it's learning curve. There will be firmware upgrades and software patches, there will be increased 4G coverage and PRL updates. It will have it's "sweet spot" on the timeline of 4G phones and 1Ghz + devices.

Then in around 2 - 3 years, believe it or not, this forum will start winding down.. some stragglers will come in here and there asking if anyone got "Android 3.1" installed on their Evo, or it's not possible for such a "legacy" device.

I love this part, right now, of getting a brand new phone, it's not all figured out yet and we all have some things to get used to and some things to learn. It's fun for some (like me) but others just wanted a polished, well working device, or maybe they've down the early adoption stage just one too many times and don't have an interest in it anymore.

Either way cheers and I hope you move back to the Android platform sooner or later. (Evo or not).
 
LOL... The display is nice but in all reality a 4.3 inch screen is a 4.3 inch screen.... It's not going to be my MAIN viewing screen every day. It's much better with Text and nice for quick video but for watching a movie or long periods of viewing... I will wait until I get home and either watch on TV or on my 23" monitor.... 16 bit and 65k Color is plenty... Your starting to get into the whole retina display that Apples says has more pixels than the human eye can even see... Then what is the point???

720p video.... yeah no camera phone right now is going to replace your dedicated video camera... I have a Flip HD video recorder and the video looks fine as long as it's on a small display... when expanded to my 55 inch LED........ Well that isn't what I expected when they said "HD"

Sprints $10 charge......... Only problem with the $10 is the way Sprint has tried to word it and pass it off.... Hey, calling plans change all the time... It's a constantly evolving thing.... As with the iPhone that makes up only about 5 - 10% of the phones on AT&T's network yet they consume about 80% of the data.... The charge is basically saying "Hey your going to consume.. ON AVERAGE more data than a guy with a Blackberry, Hero or Moment so your going to get hit with a $10 tax." People who buy Ferrari's and what not get hit with a luxury tax on those cars.... Even if they only drive them 100 miles per year they pay that tax because of what it is..... That's what your getting with the EVO... My plan still comes out $10 - 20 cheaper per month than the iPhone plan I had with AT&T so it's still a sweet deal and I get more for less (even with the $10 add on tax)

4G is expanding.... it covers roughly 30 million people in the U.S. (10% of the population) and they are expected to expand to what around 120 million people by the end of the year which will be pushing 1/2 the U.S. population? 4G is mostly a gimick any way. You don't NEED 4G all the time. I don't currently live in a 4G area but I do travel to a couple of area's with 4G and the only time I switch the 4G on when in those area's (Atlanta and RDU) is if I am uploading or downloading a file. Surfing the web 3G does just fine... By the time the 4G WiMax network is fully deployed there will be some kind of 5G service that is even BETTER and FASTER than 4G and companies will be working to roll that out... 4G is like the Ferrari again... Yeah it can do 200 mph but when do you REALLY need to do 200 mph????

I dunno... Before I gave up my iPhone I tested out the Pre.... I think WebOS is probably the best OS out there but the hardware was a piece of junk. It felt extremely cheap in the hand, I didn't like the slide action at all and the edges appeared to be sharp when that sucker was open. Plus what a tiny screen? Pixi.... No way as a dude I could own a phone called the Pixi.... I didn't even pick it up... No thanks..... I wished HTC would have purchased Palm and put WebOS on some HTC Hardware... Could you imagine WebOS on an EVO like Device?

1. What grounding issue? How often do you use your phone without holding it ? If I'm using my phone it's in my hand. If this a problem use speech to text... No issue. Myth busted.

2. The video camera is on the phone. Meh nuff said with that one. Oh ya don't forget the front facing camera pretty sweet. Chat roulette, yes please...


3. 4g.. Ya bud way to try blame sprint for not doing YOUR homework on where sprint 4g areas are. It's a work in progress. 4g is fantastic here in Austin according to sprints website.. Ya I did my homework on sprints 4g areas..

4. I don't even get 30 fps on my home pc when I play wow. So ya I'm not complain about my phone only having 30 fps. Playing games on the phone is cool but if I want to games I'm gonna bust out the p2p...

so ya you basically listed a bunch of moot point just to try to make the evo look bad. Go back to pre central with all that nonsense.

The evo is an amazing piece of technology that blows the pre out of the water. You didn't even give the phone a chance to get an update before you knocked it. The pre has had like 5 updates since they released and the pre was plagued with more problems then I can count. As a matter of fact I just went through 3 refurbished pres in 2 weeks because they were crapre. My sprint store finally just said here ya go and gave me a brand new one.
 
Again, why do people think we care why they are leaving? If someone says I'm having these issues do you have a suggestion/help that's one thing, but to post just to say you're leaving and why....LAME! We all have our own phone and can decide for ourselves if we like it or not.

They think we care because we constantly respond to them... People get emotionally vested in these devices and feel the need to defend them... LOL.

Regarding the grounding/unresponsive screen issue...so HTC designed the phone to be used only when being held? Considering many, probably the majority, of the owners aren't having this issue, isn't it possible there is indeed a problem with a certain batch? I mean it is a brand new product, there are bound to be some bad apples out there.

On the 4G, I am in Atlanta and the coverage map on sprint shows excellent coverage. In reality, even with the 4G turned on, my phone spent most of the time on 3G. It was indeed quite spotty. The $10 or the inconsistency of 4G coverage didn't really bother me but as much as they've advertised and promoted the 4G, I think it's a valid point of dissatisfaction for some.

I don't play games on my phone so the 30fps thing isn't as much of a concern except to the extent that I would have preferred if they hadn't limited it as it appears they have. I mean why would google state that they goal is 60fps if it doesn't matter? Why would manufacturers even put out phones that can do 60fps if it makes no difference from 30fps? I don't think it's purely for marketing reasons since fps isn't something that's normally heard when companies promote their phones.

And, I don't know the OP but why would he want to make the evo "look bad"? Why would he have purchased one to begin with? I don't understand why people get so defensive whenever they read any thread that even hints at possible issues with the phone or someone's disappointment with it.
