I own both, waited in line on att's launch day starting at 3am to get my iPhone 4. Having just tried out a evo I was ready to be back home on ios.
It was love at first, untill I started using it as a phone. My problem wasn't the antenna that seemed ok, did drop some calls but I'm a big boy I can remember to "hold different", no my issue is the promixity sensor. I had so many "cheeked" calls from the screen randomly commingle on, speakerphone, facetime or sometimes just tones. It happend every day for two weeks.
I love my captivate.

My issue with my iPhone 4 was after my first dropped call thanks to forgetting to hold the phone correctly. I got unhappy with the fact that i even have to THINK about having to hold a phone a certain way to make sure im getting a good signal. Steve Jobs and his cracker jack team tipped the boiling pot when then went out and started pointing fingers that other phones did this too. Got my $100 back from the store and went home with a Captivate, couldn't be happier! Threw in my 16GB microSD into the phone and now i have the same amount of storage as my returned iPhone 4 did.
(this is all just my opinion so if your offended then.. whatever)
