Returning my Galaxy 10.1

First of all please understand that I'm an Android fan buy. I've own the G1, N1,NS, and just got my beautiful HTC Sensation. My wife surprised me a month ago with a 32GB IPAD2, and yes at first I wanted to return it, but she warned me so I had to keep it. I have to say I've grown to love the device but being and Android fun I got the Samsung 10.1 last weekend and been using it for a week and I miss the Ipad2. The device is fast, I haven't gotten any crashes as other people have been getting. The main issue for me was when I trying to connect the tablet to my MAC it doesn't work. I wanted to move some movies over, but can't do it and now I heard it only works through Samsung keyes and it's a beta for the Mac. And the worst thing was the apps, honeycomb has been here for a least 5 months and only 30 something apps. Come on developers. So I'm returning the tablet when I get home but I might get the cheaper transformer or wait for honeycomb to mature. This is not an attack on the tablet I actually love the screen but the IPAD2 does 100 times more than honeycomb tablets because of lack of apps.

100 times more?.... What? I'm sure I can do a lot more on my tab that I could with friends ipad2... Explain what can you do that I can't?

I was really talking about the availability of apps. There really is an app for anything. Like I said I like to keep the tab, but no apps, can't even get google voice unless you hack the apk! Should've have been included. I had very high hopes and got disappointed.

So you got google voice on your ipad2? I have at least 50 apps installed on my tab... Not all of them are optimized, but I still have them working... Don't worry flash take care of almost everything I need, I been watching my shows direct from the websites. Hey I understand... If apps is a major thing for you, most of the apps that you need are not available and you see no use for this expensive:-$ toy, definitely get your money back. For me this is totally replacing my laptop.

I've been saving up for some time to purchase the Galaxy 10.1 tab, and I finally have enough money but during the extensive research I digressed. The thickness, form factor, and display are all magnificent, but good hardware is often rendered obsolete without good software. IPad2 is just as thin, and light, albeit the screen resolution isn't as good, it's not detrimental enough to overlook its array of apps available.

For example, I was looking to use the tab to take notes with a stylus, but there's no good enough note taking app that is smooth. IPad on the other hand offers various apps that gets the job done for this purpose.

Android is always slowly getting the port version of games from Ipad. I do not like the idea of getting hand-me downs, especially an inferior version. By the time the Android platform receives a port, newer and better games are being released for the ios.

With identical price, I pick software versatility over hardware flexibility. But I'm hearing Ipad 3 is to be released early next year, so I might just wait for that.

Regardless, with increasing market support on the Honeycomb by the day, Android experience should become brighter, but as of now, it is not nearly where Ipad is now.

You know that most if the apps on ipad are from third party right? Till last month ipad was dominating the tablet market with 98%... Android with 0.6%... So who do you think will get most support for the time been? But nobody thought that android would been dominating the smartphone market 2 years ago, things change, its about choice... You should definitely spend your hard earned money on what fits you best. I did the same!:D

That's why I'm going hold off one more year and closely follow the Android tablet's growth then decide.

I took mine back too, but Google Voice works fine on the tablet. Just download the phone version. No "hacking" involved. and if you download Groove IP after that, you can make calls using only your wifi. Works on my HTC Flyer, too.

You know what the sad part about all this. Honeycomb actually has hundreds of apps, Google just won't show them in the Market for some reason. There are 232 apps listed in the Xoom forums and that hasn't been updated for a couple weeks. There are hundreds more that they didn't even put on that list. How do you find the honeycomb apps when there isn't a Tablet ONLY section or a honeycomb ONLY section? Well you don't... and that is why people still think there are only 30 apps. This is killing developers. Google is hurting developers by not having a Tablet only section.

I am not talking about "Featured Tablet Apps". Because we all know most of those aren't even optimized for a Tablet, they just happen to work. There are about 400 Honeycomb optimized apps in the Android market and no one can freaking find them! Google what are you doing!?!?!?!?

That's because for google honeycomb is a testing ground. With ice cream sandwich there won't be a need for tablet only section. All developers know this. And most will wait until ice cream sandwich to really start developing apps.

All I need is a few good books, a few good games, good browser, Google Movies and Netflix and my Tab will meet ALL of my needs. Come on people, do you really need 100,000 app's?! ;-)

1) There is a real lack of QUALITY honeycomb apps at this point. I hear the coming release of Friend Me is going to be super nice. Where are the developers at?!

2) I really can't watch movies on this thing - Netflix is not available, Hulu is blocked, those are both important for the tab!

3) I can't load .epub books. Google Books doesn't support it, the only way to do it is hack up the crappy Nook app. Boooooo.

4) There is no way to find and keep track of Honeycomb apps that are released... I have to go to a Xoom forum on this site, where a guy is keeping a list? REALLY?!

Those things aside, there's no way I would return my Tab - there are too many features in the OS that make it better than an iPad. Tabbed browsing, true multitasking, integrated Google Talk, notification system, and useful widgets.

Just need to see Google listen to their users and fix some of these very simple issues.

Developers like myself still choose iOS first for development. The main reason is $$. No one buys Android apps, they want them all to be free. Even a .99 app gets complaints from the Android community.

Another reason is how easy it is to purchase apps on you iOS device. I don't know how many apps I've bought without even thinking. Searching and purchasing is seamless.

Good point. Tablet (and phone) success seems to be based on the number of apps available. Look at Windows Phone 7. Since it's release all that is talked about is how many apps are available compared to iOS and Android. And how many apps each of those had at that point in time in their release.

I probably have 30+ apps on my iPad right now, and only use NetFlix, the browser, the Time Warner Cable app and the Bible. I'm picking up either the Acer or Asus tablet (or maybe the Galaxy Tab 10.1, which is why I'm here) tonight and it will do 2 out of those 4 so far, and that's good enough for me right now.

Let's not forget Google handed out 5,000 of these to developers recently. Apps take some time to develop, so don't be surprised to see a slew of new Honeycomb apps come about with this tablet specifically in mind

Like mention earlier some people are having the same issues as me. Can anyone tell me how to mount the tab on a Mac and drag and drop movies? One thing I like about Android is the fact that we the users can optimize the OS to suit our needs. IOS is so locked down you can't do much. Like I said the only reason I think I'm returning my tab is because I get to do more on the IPAD2. I'm still going to get an Android tablet in the future when things are more mature.

Are you looking for the release of it, or an update? I already have it, optimized for tablet, on mine. Installed it on the day the tab was released at Best Buy, actually.

fair point

Aldiko will read epub

although, I don't agree with returning it, the software is progressing at a slow pace. Its going to take time. I'm curious to know, how many of the apps for the iPad are specifically for the iPad or just WORK on the iPad??? If you aren't happy with your choice, you are doing the right thing in returning it. I just hope Honeycomb's adoption is widespread enough to get development moving. With that being said...I love my Galaxy Tab 10.1....

Recent numbers say 100,000 (source below). Personally the number of apps doesn't matter, just having the apps you want for your own use. I don't think there is really a right or wrong here, just personal preference. I wasn't impressed with the Zoom or the LG tablets, but the Samsung 10.1 is slick.
