Do you think it would be possible for me to end up installing Open WebOS on my Nexus 7 when the OS is actually out?

Do you think it's actually a good idea?

I'm not familiar with it - is it a modified, open version of WebOS that was used on the flopped HP tablets? What is the appeal aside from novelty?

Open WebOS is the open sourced version of WebOS.

It has been Open Sourced by HP.

The appeal is the same thing that was the appeal of the touchpad, the amazing OS. I love Jelly Bean, but WebOS is really great (when configured properly). I almost got a touchpad, but got Xoom before it was released.

And now I can't find them.

Touch pad has android. I don't see why the reverse isn't possible. If any tablet gets it, it'll be the N7.

As for why, I agree, WebOS is a great os. Android has many design bits and a few employees from WebOS including their lead designer, Matias Duarte.

I really want open WebOS to succeed. I think everyone in the mobile space benefits from having more options and ideas out there. I'll give it a whirl if it hits the N7.

Basically this. You won't be able to "just install" it. You'd need to be able to make it work for the device or, more likely, hope that some interested developers feel like doing it. I would guess the chances are slim of that happening but certainly not impossible.. It's up to the community. With an unlockable bootloader as we have it is certainly possible though.
