Should You Buy It

Nope. The curved screen on the Note Edge can surprisingly useful, and way less of a random gimmick than any curved-screen phone that's come before. But! It's not useful enough to be worth the extra $100 you can expect to pay for it. Besides, it's not worth the drawbacks; You lose compatibility with the upcoming (and awesome) Gear VR, you sacrifice some precious battery life, and you'll hate yourself a little bit every time you try to put the phone to sleep.

If the Note Edge was the only new Note phone, this might be a tougher call, but since it's not, the decision is easy. The Galaxy Note Edge is not a total disaster by any means, but you should definitely just get the Galaxy Note 4 instead, and maybe use some of the money you save to buy a bedside alarm clock and a book of conversation starters.

It is not worth the extra $100 just for the curved edge. But still I think its cool to have and is somewhat useful

Just Googled Note Edge and read recent reviews from the WSJ, BGR, PC Magazine and Business Insider.

They are ALL bashing it, calling it a gimmick and recommending the Note 4 over it.

Interesting.

Mine is still pre-ordered, though...

I have both devices and think they are both great. Those same people said the same thing about the original Note, and look what happened.

I don't put stock in the opinions of columnists who get these phones thrown at them, use them for a day or so to write their review and then dummp them in a drawer.

Hardware issues are one thing, but opinions are just that.

Reviewers are like critics, it's their job to write something negative. After all, nothing can be perfect can it? FYI: My Note Edge comes as close to perfect as you're going to get, along with the Note 4 which is another outstanding device (my hubby has that). I'm in smart phone nirvana

I'm wondering what the update situation will be with the edge? I know Sammy is slow with updates as it is and wonder if there will be actual updates since it's a limited phone.

No idea but I learned a LONG time ago not to worry about that stuff. It is what it is and I refuse to drive myself crazy with it. I bought this thing for what it can do NOW. Anything more is just icing on the cake.

True, ive been with the note series from the start, having had the original note and then the note 2. I didnt go withe the 3 or 4 since the note 2 has been a great phone and there was plenty of xda action available. Hopefully, there will be some xda work for this one as well.

It would be great seeing lolipop on this device at some point !

Just seen a list of phones that are going to get it and the Edge is definitely on there although no date is listed for it or the Note 4 yet. Good news

I have had my Note Edge since Friday, and I have no regrets. This is one amazing phone! Coupled with my Gear S I have the ultimate combo pack in technology. People see the phone and they instantly recognize the design is like no other they've ever seen. I mentioned in another thread that someone stopped and asked if this was a test unit and whether I worked for Samsung.

One of my favorite features is the ability to wake the Edge to check for notifications or weather updates without turning on the display. I also like that I can access up to 20 of my favorite apps with a simple flick of my thumb along the Edge screen. I find that I barely use the recent apps button anymore.

Some reviewers may call the Edge a "gimmick," but unlike the negative connotation they often mean by saying that, the Edge is actually quite useful and helpful.

as it has been mentioned the edge is a gimmicky version of the Note 4. but wasn't the original note got bashed for being a gimmick and now its a flag ship phone. the edge is just another gimmick but really a test to see how people like the edge. I personally love my edge. it was shipped out on the release date and yes $100 more is steep, but i think if the note 4 was $100 dollar less it would be easier to swallow. i truthfully hope i can keep the edge for more then 2 years so the $100 extra doesn't bother me. truthfully i love the edge and have only one downside, the battery is smaller. the edge really does speed up my efficiently and i love the quick access.

You know, when it's not used in the negative a "gimmick" is something that's designed to distinguish a product or service from its competition.

When used in the negative it implies a trick or scheme designed to fool or mislead because there is no useful purpose for the inclusion.

I for one do not believe for one second there was/is an attempt to fool or mislead with this product or any other smartphone offering. Samsung has put in a design and feature element to distinguish it's products from the competition. The "gimmick" will prove to be useful and helpful for some, and not so much for others.

But clearly the Edge screen of this phone sets it apart from any other on the market and I actually like it.

According to Wikipedia there was a time when the different and fanciful colors used by manufacturer's of tooth brushes were called a "gimmick." However, they were added as part of a marketing campaign to encourage kids to brush their teeth and to set the product apart from the standard boring brushes companies used to produce. Was adding colors useful or helpful?

I bet we'd be hard pressed to find a househould that doesn't use different color tooth brushes.

That's exactly what I'm saying DAS. The side edge of this phone is, in fact, very useful (at least for me). Aside from that, even if it WERE a gimmick, how do you come out and say something is pointless JUST because it may be a gimmick? So long as people go into it with their eyes open, where's the harm? I knew when I bought it that I may find that edge no more than interesting and perhaps not adding to my experience at all. I was absolutely thrilled to find that it absolutely was useful and not just something cool to look at. It allowed me to keep my home screens to 3 and also provided me way more apps to quickly access than the typical 4 you get with the other Samsung phones. How is that not a good thing? I also wondered how it would be given that I hold my phone in my left hand and use my right to do what I need to. Again, no problem. Rarely ever accidentally launch any icons. In conclusion, I couldn't possibly be happier that I decided on this phone because it sure was close between it and the Note 4 which my hubby got. That also is one sweetly made device. Everyone's happy - especially me.

P.S. Didn't really think of it at the time but now that the edge shows incoming calls instead of popping up right in the middle of me doing something, I am EXTRA happy.
