Ringer volume too loud?

Hi all,

My wife just got a brand-new MAXX HD, and in setting it up we've noticed that the ringer is REALLY, REALLY loud. Like twice as loud as any other media. Even set to the lowest possible setting (1 notch above "silent") it sounds like any other phone at full blast. It was so loud (combined with playing from the phone when headphones were plugged in) that we thought it might be broken and we'd have to return it.

Is this a normal thing? Is the phone's ringer just obnoxiously loud (and if so, how come no one ever mentioned it)? Or might something be broken that we should get replaced while it's under warranty? Worse case: does anyone have good suggestions for ways to reduce the volume of the ringer to reasonable levels?

Thanks in advance!

I really cannot help you much, but i have a question. Is it a custom ringtone or a stock one?

We noted it on a custom ringtone (mp3 set as ringtone; what she had used previously without issue on her old Droid). But even the stock noises are really loud.

Well, since it is happening on stock, it blows my theory.

The only other thing I will say is tech has come a log way since the original phone, and that includes speaker output. I had to lower the volume on some of my tones in the past when switching phones

The phone seems to be loud in general. As you mentioned, 1 notch above silent is like full blast on other phones. I haven't found a fix for it yet. Perhaps there is some volume control app?

As reported elsewhere, a user that installed a leaked JellyBean version, the volume went down to a reasonable level. Still loud, but reasonable. Maybe when JB hits OTA this will be fixed.

Am I one of the few who doesn't mind waking up the dead with my ringtones and alarms? Inasmuch as I understand this may be a problem for some of you, I hope the issue is addressed in Jellybean as well, but hope we still have the ability to get as loud as we can right now. :-!

I agree it would be nice to take full advantage of a wider range of volume, as long as it can be lowered to a whisper when the situation warrants. I had problems with my iP4 ringer volume. There was only one ringtone that was loud/piercing enough to be heard outside. I can certainly hear the Maxx HD, as can the neighbors.

Put me down as another who loves the volume as it currently is. I'm a heavy sleeper and need all the help I can get.

I'm ok with the ringer volume. I have used my cellphones as my alarm clock for years. The night my RMHD came, I didn't have much time to play around before bed after getting it set up. The alarm was one notch below full blast and when it went off at 4am, I think I might have pee'd a little.

I do wish that I could set it to gradually increase volume like my X2 did. It would start really soft and even though I sleep heavy, most mornings it would wake me before my wife heard it.

Unfortunately it's not a bug. All three of the 2012 RAZRs have excessively loud ringers.
I wish they'd tone it down, I'm forced to use vibrate mode most times...
Thankfully the Smart Actions help me avoid embarrassing situations at work - I have one set to change ringer to vibe between work hours.

Has anyone else ran into this problem?

You set your phone from "Sound On" to "Silent Mode" on your lock screen. I do it every day at work.
Then I come home and switch it back to "Sound On"
After doing this, I realize that my Ringer Volume gets set 3 notches above silent and not set back to where I originally had it before I put my phone in "Silent Mode"

Is this a normal occurrence? A bug? Or just a smart time to start using Smart Actions.... bleh

I have the same problem. It is very nice to be loud, sometimes, like when you are in a noisy office or restaurant and you need to make sure you notice your phone ringing or text beeping. On the other hand, when the office is quiet, everyone on the floor can hear when I get a text and it annoys them and they bother me about it. I'm glad loud is an option, but I wish we had the option for very quiet also.
