I've watched a few previous threads about per-contact Ringtones, and per-contact SMS Tones.
Ringo Pro does address both of these without the need to create duplicate in-phone contacts.
-- Yes, Ringo Pro is a pay-for app in the Market, and yes, at 4.99 Euro, it's one of the more expensive that I've purchased. However, I felt this was worth it, for me to not have to perform the weird/complicated work-arounds above for managing ringtones.
Ringo Pro allows the assignment of the Default Ringtone and the Default SMS Tone. On the main page, it also has some Advanced features (Announce Caller/SMS sender, Announce SMS message, SMS Nag, Vibrate Patterns)
Then, on the contacts tab, you're able to :
- Set the Contact picture
- Set the Ringtone for this contact
- Option for Directing calls for a specific Contact to Voicemail
- Set the SMS Tone for the contact
- Set a per-contact Vibrate pattern.
(LED Blinking is obviously not supported even though the App shows this as an option)
There's also "Group Ringtone" setting.. HOWEVER, I would consider this more of a "Batch Ringtone assigment" than "Group Ringtone".
- You are able to display a certain group that you have defined, and then set a ringtone for it. BEWARE that this will over-write any per-contact tones you have set for any people in that group.
- Also, if you add/remove people from the group, they will no inherit the ringtone previously assigned.
.. Thus, why I consider this a "Batch Ringtone assignment". you perform the batch operation once, and it does the assignment for all people in the group.., but there's no way to modify this in the future, without performing another "batch operation". (again, overwriting any special ringtones you have assigned to individuals).
All in all, I see this as a more complete method for managing tones for both Ring and SMS for all contacts. You'll just have to decide whether you are OK with the cost, or would rather go through the methods above to assign them for free.
- For the Ringtones, we've discovered that for the phone to be able to do this, you have to duplicate an "in-phone" contact for each person, then assign the tone to that in-phone contact.
- For SMS Tones, you have to use a 3rd party app (such as ChompSMS or Handcent SMS) to assign per-contact SMS Tones.
