Ringtones for each contact versus default ringtone

I just upgraded to the S4 from a Droid Pro. Incredible upgrade, love the phone.

One issue I am having is, I want to assign specific ringtones to a small number of contacts, and then have the rest of the contacts use a default ringtone for phone calls, messaging, etc.

If I do that, whenever I get a notification from one of the contacts where I have assigned the specific ringtone, I also hear the default ringtone (which i set within the main settings screen).

It would appear the phone assumes since it has a default ringtone set, it should use that for all contacts, even the ones where I have a custom ringtone set.

If I set the default to "silent", then I don't get ringtones from any contacts other than the one I set up with specific ringtones.

I have hundreds and hundreds of contacts, so its not realistic to set a ringtone for each of the ones that need that "default" ringtone.

Am I missing something simple? Is there a neasy way to set up special ringtones for just a handful of contacts, and then assign a blanket default ringtone for everyone else, without having to do it one by one?

Settings -> My Device -> Sound -> Ringtones: I have my default ringtone set.
Messages -> Settings -> Notification settings -> Select Ringtone: I have my default (SMS/MMS) notification set.
Contacts -> Contact -> Ringtone: I have a personalized ringtone set.
Contacts -> Contact -> Message alert: I have a personalized message (SMS/MMS) notification set.

For me, neither one interferes with the other and each functions as intended.

And thats the way I set it up, thinking I was good to go.

I may have found the problem, need to do some testing to be sure. In the midst of importing contacts from blackberry to droid pro to S4 over the past couple years, I have a lot of duplicates...and one of those contacts with some duplicate entries is one where I am seeing this, but the unique ringtone is only assigned to one of those entries..looking like its simply a matter of doing some contact cleanup and I'm good to go.

So the duplicate contact issue does not seem to be the cause. I haven't reset the phone since clearing the dupe contacts, but wouldn't think it would be necessary.

If anyone wants to run a test..I'm using the 'glints" sounds for the contact, and the "verizon alert" as the default tone. Not 100% sure if the two tones are running serially/consecutive, or if I am just hearing the end of the VZ alert tone since it seems to be longer in duration.

So it does seem to be a duplicate contact issue and involves the syncing of contacts with Microsoft Outlook. Not sure I completely understand what is going on just yet, but definitely getting closer to sorting it out.

Change your "Contacts to display" setting to All if it isn't already, and link a duplicate contact. See if you hear just the one sound at that point. If so, you've found a solution, if you don't have a boat load of contacts to merge.

Found it! Had an app called Ringo Lite on my old Droid pro, didn't think I had reinstalled it on this phone but i had. It allows custom control of ring tones, not really needed with the better features on this phone with jelly bean. Ringo Lite uninstalled, problem solved.
