Ringtones & Sound Notifications

My wife has a Moto G5 Plus and is in a Nursing home an hour away so sometimes I need to try to tell her how to troubleshoot over the phone.

She out of the blue appears to not be hearing any ringtones for calls not in her address book... if that makes sense. If I call her it rings with my custom ringtone fine but yesterday my son tried calling several times from a friend’s phone and the display showed him calling but no ringtone. She finally realized he was calling when she could visually see her phone. What setting got messed up?

Another issue which I guess isn’t related is I have the Nexx Garage opener sensor. It come with it’s own app and notifies you when your garage opens & shuts. Notification is turned on and notify by voice. This used to notify all the time but now just gives a visual notification on the screen... just like incoming calls.

Are these two issues related?

Did the phone recently update to Oreo (Android 8.0)? Google made a mess of Notification sounds with that update, especially if trying to use a custom sound

All the Notification Settings changes with 8.0. Try picking a default Notification sound, call tone and not a custom tone. I had a lot of issues with custom sounds after Oreo

Where would that setting be? I’m pretty sure Do No Disturb is not turned on since she gets ringtones when I call.
In the quick settings in the notifications drop down. If it's set for priority (contacts only) it will ring for anybody in the contacts list but won't for any other calls.

Doesn't this just apply if Do Not Disturb is enabled?

Of course. If this just started after the 8.0 update, you may want to go to recovery and clear the cache. It will help clear out the leftovers from old system files. I always do a cache wipe after a major update and have never experienced some of the problems I've seen reported.

If I understand right this doesn’t wipe apps or settings correct?

That is correct. Just FYI....for me I did a cache wipe after Oreo on my Moto Z Force. But any app that I was using a custom sound would no longer play that sound. It would only play notification sounds if the selected sound was a default sound that came with the phone. Many users posted about this on the Moto forum. That's why I suggested picking one sound for all phone calls, a default system sound that came with the phone. See what happens. Do all calls ring through or not? If so then you can try using custom notification sounds again for select callers / contacts. But first, just see if all calls work correctly using the same ringtone that came on the phone, and go from there. It's just a suggestion, buy how I started fixing all the Notification problems I had with a Z Force after Oreo.

Correct, it will only clear cache files. So your data, apps, settings, files, etc will be untouched.

I'm on 8.0 and I use a custom ringtone, notification sound and 3 different custom sounds for my different email accounts. And by the way, ensure the.mp3 file for the ringtone is in the folder on internal storage.

Everything also works fine for me on my Z2 Force running 8.0. And custom sounds also work fine on my wife's Moto Z2 Play running 8.0. What I am saying is that when my Z Force was upgraded from 7.1 to 8.0 custom notification sound functionality was all messed up. It was for many other Z Force users also, and many Z Play users. And there are dozens of posts like this (custom sounds don't work) on other Forums from Samsung users also after they upgraded from 7.1 to 8.0. No amount of cache clearing helped my Z Force or wife's Z Play after Oreo. I had to switch all custom ringtones and notification sounds to stock sounds, then reboot and start selectively finding the new Notification Settings menu within each app and setting the custom sounds again. Most apps worked fine after that, since many prompted with "Storage" permission requests and once granted the custom sound would play.

Moto G5 Oreo 8.1. Not having any problems with custom ringtones and notifications. Maybe the bug was rectified going from Oreo 8 to Oreo 8.1.

Ok I was able to mess with my wife’s phone today and she mistakenly had Do Not Disturbed enabled... so that solves that.

The other issue was the Nexx Garage app not alerting via sound but apparently it is. When the garage door is opening she is getting both a banner & voice alert like she should. The biggest issue is the sound alert is so low you have to hold up to your ear to hear it... she says it used to be loud but not now.

I checked all her phone sound levels and they are all maxed out. Any idea why the volume level for the Nexx Garage app would be now be much lower?

Doing some Googling I'm seeing complaints on lower sound levels with 8.1 Oreo. I wonder if that's what's going on with notifications in general on my wife's phone and nothing specific to the Nexx Garage app. I shouldn't say this but my wife is kind of a klutz with electronic devices and knows absolutely nothing when it comes to them. :D She only noticed the garage app notification volume changed but not necessarily any other volumes that might have too. I hope Google doesn't ignore this possible bug.

Do you know of any apps that could disable Do Not Disturb & Airplane Mode where my wife couldn't accidentally enable them?
