Well the nightlies are here, so let's give thanks to the great CM devs and all folks associated with the project (which I am not). If you want to ride the nightly train for your Nexus 7, c'mon down...

[WARN]Rooting, roming, flashing, hacking, etc. will do some crazy stuff. It could break your phone. Be aware of these risks when you're going through this stuff, and for the love of all that is holy, have a backup plan![/WARN]

[INFO]Download links for CyanogenMod 10 Nightlies

  • The rom zips will always be found at "get.cm." Since our device is "grouper," look for grouper on the left hand device menu. A specific link to the grouper nightlies is found here.
  • Official CM GAPPs are maintained at goo.im. The latest GAPPs package, from 7/26/12, can be found here.
[/INFO]

Installation Procedure

First ==> download the rom, download the "GAPPs" file (Google Applications, like gmail, play store, etc., which are separated due to legal rights), that as well, and place these files on your internal storage--the "faux sdcard." Be sure to check the md5's of the downloads to ensure that they match up with the given md5.

Second ==> reboot into recovery, either by selecting recovery mode at the bootloader (remember--be plugged into a computer) or by using the option in an application.

[TIP]Manually Rebooting Into the Bootloader
  1. Power down the tablet.
  2. Plug the tablet into a computer; no need to set it up, just make sure that the USB cable is connected to a computer.
  3. Once completely off, hold down the "volume down" button and the power button simultaneously.
  4. You will see small lines of dialogue in the right--it should say "fastboot mode" in red at the top of the dialogue. This is the bootloader, congrats :).
  5. To get into the recovery, simply use the volume toggle to find "Recovery Mode" and use the power button to select it.
[/TIP]

Third ==> make a backup. If you use CWM, the best way to do this is to clear cache and dalvik before you make a backup--it'll be cleaner and take a bit less time.

Fourth ==> wipe your phone. There are two forms of wiping. They are full/clean and dirty (hence "dirty flashing"). Clean wiping should occur whenever you have issues with your device or are switching from one rom (e.g. AOKP) to another rom (e.g. CM10 nightlies). Dirty flashing should occur when going from one "build" (e.g. CM10's August 18th build) to another build of the same rom (e.g. CM10's August 19th build).

[INFO]Clean/Full Wiping
  • Wipe data/factory reset (this also wipes the cache)
  • Wipe cache (just do it lol, it's good to make it habitual)
  • Wipe dalvik cache (in advanced)
  • Wipe system (i.e. format system in mounts/storage)

Dirty Wiping
  • Wipe cache
  • Wipe dalvik cache (in advanced)
  • Wipe system (i.e. format system in mounts/storage)
[/INFO]

Fifth ==> install the rom and GAPPs. This is the easiest part. Look for "install from sdcard" in recovery, find the zip file that you placed on your device in step 1, then flash/install that zip file. Once the rom zip is installed, be sure to immediately install the GAPPs file or else you won't have a Play Store and other Google-made goodies.

Sixth ==> reboot the "system" (it's a normal reboot), setup your device, and if you used Titanium Backup, go from there.

Re: Official CyanogenMod Nightlies

I am a noob. Can you point me to a link that refers to the "clean flash"? I am up to speed on the "dirty" one. Thank you.

Re: Official CyanogenMod Nightlies

Since this will be my first ROM install, I will not have to do any cleaning.......correct?

No, treat stock as a stock rom and do a full clean wipe.

The 8/18 nightly is out. Meander over to get.cm for the file and be sure to get the gapps package from goo.im.

Be aware folks; word is out that the first nightly is not booting up. You might want to wait for word of a fix or a new nightly (whichever comes first).

Just read about this and I know a member here experienced the same.

Hold off until the issue is fixed. Until then, flash Euroskank's/other builds :)

I can attest to this. After doing a clean install using TWRP (wipe data/factory restore/cache/davlik/system) and installed the newest CM10 nightly with GAPPS 7/26 it went past the Google screen and hung on a black screen. Whenever I tried to turn the device off it would just reboot and do the process all over. Had to restore a previous backup.

For reference, what version of TWRP do you have flashed? I think I know the answer but figured it should show up here as well.

I have (along with others) had issues with 2.2.1.4 on grouper. Nothing sticks when flashing and you'll keep rebooting into recovery. 2.2.1.0 seems to be ok, however.

Same experience here. I did a clean wipe and flashed using CMW 6.0.1.0 and it hung on a black screen. Tried getting back into recovery via bootloader but hung on the Google screen. Will need to get to a computer later to get things fixed up.

I used CWM to flash it, and had the same exact issue. Google screen, then hangs on black screen.

Add me to the list of users who flashed the nightly and can't get past the black screen after the Google logo. Using TWRP 2.2.1

Stick with euroskank. Flashed last night and lovin it. Consider this my prescription to the thread :D

Had to reflash the recovery using fastboot, but after that, I restored a backup of JellyBro/Euroskank so my N7 is back in action. What should I flash next? ;)

Hmmm. I have no idea whats available but please do share when you make the decision. I'll jump on the bandwagon.
