Root Considerations

So I've been reading about rooting the Inc for awhile now...I'd like the extra ability of rooted apps (not really interested in ROMs so much). However, I'm still on the fence. I just have a couple of questions that I'd like to ask you root pros:

  1. When you root, it doesn't erase what you have on the phone now, right?
  2. Have any of you tried to go back to stock from root? Did it work?
  3. When going back to stock from root, thats when you lose everything right?
  4. If you're rooted, can you upgrade to the next official OTA update?
  5. Most likely, if you go to the next OTA, root will break right?
  6. Is there an easy way to root without using Unrevoked (to avoid getting recovery replaced by Clockworkmod)?

Thanks!

1. No.
2. I haven't tried, but I am completely confident it will work great.
3. Yes, you loose all of your apps, etc.
4. At this moment, we don't know. However, probably not.
5. Something will.
6. I'd highly suggest using Clockworkmod; it's half of what root is. It gives you the ability to do nandroid backups, etc.

As for the update, I've gotten a plan. I'm going to do a Titanium backup, restore to stock, update, root, and restore all of my apps and data via Titanium. Not sure if that's a plan, but it's something to think about. Alternatively, I believe one of the geniuses in the Android community may put out a .zip update that is safe for rooted users. Or, you can just go to a ROM that includes all the features of the OTA.

I'd go for the root. But if you're a bit worried, this guide helped me out TONS: Howto: Root the HTC Droid Incredible – Technology – Jonamerica.com

I highly suggest it; it shows just how easy it is to do. And undo. And backup. Basically, everything. ;)

I hate to toss a monkeywrench into your plan...but I don't think Titanium Backup will work without root.

"My Backup" will do most of what Titanium Backup can do, so far as restoring your applications and data goes. You will still need to do some setups and customizations...unless someone can tell me how to back up a scene.

I found this out last night when I had to do a wipe because of a low memory issue.

I'm on the fence, too. I used to change ROMs on my Omnia every other week or so as new ones came out. But I've been so happy with this DI that I just can't get worked up about rooting just yet. Since the 2.2 update is (hopefully) scheduled for Early August, I think I'll wait and then see if I'll still be able to root after that.

On the other hand, I might go ahead and root, just for fun. But probably not. ;)

Lol. Love the indecisiveness :D

Yeah that's almost how I feel. I want to root to use IncrediLight, Autostarts, take screenshots, etc. But the new release is supposedly coming soon, so I can't decide whether it's worth it yet. I do hate reinstalling\reconfiguring after a wipe though, so that might be the deciding factor.

Thanks for the clarification all!

1. No
2. I rooted prior to Unrevoked3 so I did go back to stock form just to try unrevoked. Worked fine except your phone is wiped clean. But like previously noted, i used titanium back up and when i rerooted i restored everything.
4 doubt it
5 if your rooted you WILL wait for the rom gods to tell you what to do so you dont loose root
6. Unrevoked is the easy was but i originaly did the ten minute root which leaves stock reconery.

I just rooted and Im running 2.2 with no issues so far. Camera works as well as 720P video. Not sure if I am just lucky but everything is running most perfect so far.

What ROM are you using? Did you do a straight upgrade from stock 2.1?

I ended up rooting...I'm pretty glad I did. Autoruns, Drocap, Root Terminal Access, IncrediLight, all kicking ***. Now I just need to find more root-capable programs :D

I am running the recently updated leak from XDA that came out a few days back. The only thing that is annoying me is stupid skype that keeps autostarting at boot other than that haven't noticed a thing. The new boot animation looks nice too! I was going to wait for the ota but when xda said you may not be able to root with the ota i jumped ship.

Autoruns should be able to prevent Skype from starting on boot.
