As far as good root apps go, it's really whatever you want to use the phone for. For instance, if you want a wireless hotspot without paying $20 a month for Verizon's service, get Barnacle Wifi Tether (free in market). If you want a solid file browser, check out Root Explorer ($1.99 I believe, but well worth it IMO). Titanium Backup is great for backing up apps (free version in market). Finally, if you want to mess with ROMs, etc., you will need the Droid X Bootstrap app and ROM Manager (free versions for both, but buying the premium version is highly recommended as it gets money to the devs that do the hard work so we can enjoy our phones to the fullest!!).
You can also remove the bloatware with root access, however, that is something that has been discussed at length elsewhere. Google is your best friend there; there are many full lists about what to remove and what not to remove, as well as how to do it.
That's a small idea of what you can do with root access. Rooting is nice, but without a purpose or reason you need root, there is no reason to do it.
(Some good advice that was given to me is to make sure you can return your phone to stock without fail in case you do screw it up doing anything above. Root access can be dangerous to the extent that you could potentially delete important system files, so having the ability to flash an SBF file to your phone using RSD Lite is a very, very good idea. Check out
Home for a definitive guide and really all the files you need.)
Good luck! Just remember that Google is sometimes as helpful as posting a new thread, and usually much faster.
