I am not to much for jumpin on forums. But.... I found something on hear that helped so let me pay my respects to those who help all us who wish to command to do so freely.
My ally had 2.2.1 O.S.A stock from V Z wireless bout 8 months ago. After all the buzz on market and other venues of the big to do with 2.2.2 i looked into it to see what the fuss was.!
well neither here nor there I don't want to pay 125 for a phone "lease" an 2500 a year in service for a phone they control.
Anyway the point is
I did something a little different my OTA came and for whatever reason I decided not to download the Lg Ally tool Verizon requires you have.
I waited to install the OTA which after reading 2.2.2 vs 2.2.1 and figuring any new patches will take a bit i jumped in with OTA with out using the App form VZ it installed rebooted and changes were kernel to aloha 2 and my OSA Was still 2.2.1 i factory reset and it jumped to 2.2.2 kernel no change.
So i never used the lg ally app from VZ.

My phone rooted today via
Ginger break v1.1 .apk by chain fire I got this app at xda forum apk downloaded straight on the phone. Must have allow non market apps ON in debug mode on ,found on stock app. In your app drawer you will see the android dude on the ginger break open like any other app it automatically starts loading commands at a pretty fast pace. in the corner SD is ok to remove comes up LEAVE THE SD IN !

I first run I took out the sd card when the phone says it is ok and ad to factory reset and do again VZ does not allow me to fast boot on stock obviously... Any way I left the card in ran again and all was well. I jumped into Rom Manager free Ver and no longer received the no root. I got the lecture on playing on Ui and Sys files is against the rules lecture instead! I also have downloaded several other root privilege only apps and all work well i have backed up to a spare sd card this little gem and all other info on phone! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED in case you get to crazy on your phone you will have an out of sorts that guarantees reroot!
In close I am Mac Man Who cant stand windows anything and I was able to do this! For those of you who are not hip to linux i recommend linux for dummies and perhaps throwing knoppix on a laptop and playing around safely.
In the USA information is free or at least only a couple bucks in late fees at the library! Thank everyone who contributed on cracking this pain in the ass phone. I will now see what it really does. Must be some reason it was harder than Iphone 1,2,3, and 4 as well as Eris, droid X and all others i've popped open.
