Root or not to Root? That is the question

I have been a long time iPhone guy so android and abilities are a little alien to me. I love my One and I want to take full advantage of customization and also to optimize performance. I would love to get rid of a lot of AT&Ts bloatware and optimize my battery, which has been an issue for me. I want to run something clean and simple and don't really want to use a launcher and just create a layer on top of sense. What are your thoughts on rooting and what custom roms have you seen that are really slick for the One?

I would say root but before diving in just do a little research. There probably won't be many roms available yet but too I would look out for are from BaMF and Liquid.

Root but be cautious...to root you need to unlock your bootloader. If you have to repair your phone it'll say TAMPERED and currently there is no way to change it. One will eventually come soon. But in my opinion its worth the root because flashing roms can add extra features to this awesome device.
_Titanium backup
_Kernel flash (you can also implement HOME2Wake which means you press the home button and the screen turns on)
_Enhanced battery life/features
_Overclock
Not to mention you can also upgrade to 4.2 if a dev makes a rom thats suitable for the ONE

So...Do it just make sure you know the risks.

Roms I have used that are slick:

TrickDroid
Revolution 7.1
Renovate

I have tested all and they never slowed my phone. Check em out at xda

Check out my thread here http://forums.androidcentral.com/ht...oader-custom-recovery-root-flashing-roms.html and feel free to ask questions. Use the links in the thread for research and the developer ROMs and tweaks that are available.

Just one thing, the bootloader can be relocked. At the end of unlocking on HTCDEV, they provide instructions on how to relock it. Also, hopefully someone finds an exploit to root that doesn't need unlock.... fingers crossed.

That would be a big undertaking especially since the stock kernel won't let anything be written into the system partition while the device is powered up and it also reverts changes made. I'm usually the person to root my phone the first day I have it but as of now I see no reason

Of course it's a big undertaking but that's why we let the devs do it and for some reason they thrive on solving these problems lol. I do root the first day because of certain apps. I flash roms after a while... When I'm bored with stock or if there's a custom rom with the updated OS and HTC/carrier hasn't yet released it to my device.

I've rooted my past smartphones, but I regret rooting my previous phone (HTC EVO 4G LTE). It was a real pain to unroot it and get the stock ROM reloaded before I sent it back to HTC for the $100 trade-in. I was able to do so, but it took a lot of Googling and trial-n-error on my part. For now, I'm not planning to root my new HTC One on AT&T. The phone doesn't have too much bloatware, and it seems to be running just fine as-is.

Why Did you unroot the first thing they were going to do is Thu it back to stock and at that point warranty doesn't matter.
But yeah I hope a dev can fully unlock this phone without using the HTC dev method. I'm still going to root this phone if it makes it past 14 days and or we get the HTC logo as a menu button.

I didn't want to take any chances and give HTC any reasons to not honor the $100 trade-in offer. I personally think it looks bad when the bootloader shows, "**TAMPERED**" and "Unlocked" on the screen. Now, the only thing it shows is "Relocked" which seems less obvious to me. I rooted in the first place to have a few additional features, but in the end it was just not worth it for me.
