Root or Not?

I have an HTC Aria with the android 2.2 update. It has been choppy and slow since I updated it. I want to know, could I fix that problem by rooting the device? What are the benefits of rooting it? And what are the potential dangers? Could it cause the phone to run even more choppily?

It deletes your data, so make sure you back up your contacts to your SD card. Just do it, even doing a factory reset would make it run better.
I was in the same position as you a few days ago and I rooted. I will never want to go back to a stock device, check out CM7 if you end up rooting.
