Just switched from the iPhone on AT&T to the TB on Verizon a couple weeks ago. Needed off my parents plan and Verizon was about to drop their unlimited data plan.

I was on vacation in Orlando the week after I got it when I rooted and installed CM7, and everything seemed fine. My 4G speeds were under 10Mbps, but I figured that I just had a bad signal. Then I got home and realized it must be the radio because I was still only getting anywhere from 4-9Mbps on 4G when before rooting I got 25-35Mbps. I tried flashing multiple radios, including MR1, 2, and 2.5, as well as several from this thread ([RADIO] HTC Thunderbolt Radios [PG05IMG.zip] (Updated: 8 July 2011) - xda-developers). They all caused me to lose service completely except for one. I forgot which one it was, but it was only 1x anyway. I lost 3G and 4G with them all.

So I unrooted and everything returned to normal and then I rooted again, but this time I didn't flash any ROMs. Rooting alone dropped my speeds from whatever radio it flashed during the process, and again any other radio I used caused me to lose signal.

What do I do? Am I missing something? I know the auto root tool I used is kind of old, so is there something new out I should use? And what radio? I miss Gingerbread, and CM7 rocks my socks, but neither are worth giving up over 25Mbps 4G, especially when I mostly tether with it anyway.

What are your speeds from Speakeasy - Speed Test. Also, there are 2 versions of CM7, one for the MR1 radio and one for MR2/2.5 radios. You must use the radio corresponding to your version of CM7 or it will not get a signal.

What do I do?
Forget speed. You have no way of knowing what the backhaul capabilities are at any given cell site. Different radios really won't affect speed. Different radios are all about control of acquiring/keeping a signal, not speed. You're chasing a ghost. I've had the same radios give me 4mbps in one location and 30mpbs in another.

I'll have to do that in a little bit. I'm on my iPad right now. ThunderBolt is in the other room charging.

And I think I used the one for the MR1 radio but I'm not really sure. But I said I flashed the MR1, 2, and 2.5 radios so that shouldn't matter, right? Since with either one I would have flashed the correct radio.

Well I said I thought it was just my signal in Florida, but at my house my speeds never went above 9Mbps. I've done several speed tests at my house and they've almost always been above 20Mbps, usually between 25 and 35. I also did several tests before I rooted for the second time and I was still getting over 20Mbps, then after I rooted it wouldn't get above 9Mbps, again after multiple tests. It was the same exact location at relatively the same time.

Flash the MR2 one. If the radio works, then you were running an MR2+ radio.

I did that one though. I tried MR1, MR2, and MR2.5. They all made me lose signal completely.

I guess I'll try again on Wednesday when I'm off work.

I had meant the MR2 based CM7. But I checked now and the current version is MR2 only. Try this new GB one and see if that helps you:
Radios!

Redownload the CM7 v1.4 and try reflashing it.

Alright thanks. I'll try tonight because everything is on my dad's computer and I don't have Windows on my Mac.

Well now I'm on latest version of CM7 with MR2 radio and download speeds are crap. I get about 4-6Mbps down compared to the 25-35 it used to be. Ping is surprisingly a little better though. Upload speed seems a little lower than normal, but it's not bad.

Oh well. Guess this is the price I pay for GB. =/

how many or which of the mr2+ radios have you tried? some might work better than others with your device...
