Root Questions

Alright lately I have found my Echo to be right where I would like it to be. The battery isn't murderously drained. I can still frequently use my phone through the day without constant worry of recharging (due in part to the second battery always being charged and with me.) And it's overall performance is right where I believe a phone with Snapdragon should be. SO...my next question is rooting. I never really understood what it was. So firstly can someone give me the rundown on why rooting would help and if you use some sort of technical term please explain it for me...im a tad bit slow when it comes to this stuff.

Rooting gives you superuser permissons, which will let your phone do things that it could not normally do. You would be able to install apps that require root. You would also be able to; browse the echos files with root explorer, you could freeze bloatware (apps pre-installed on phone when bought) with bloat freezer. Freezing the apps is great, you won't see the stuff you don't want in your app drawer, like all the sprint stuff. There alot of different things that can be done with various apps.

To get further benefits you would need a custom kernal and/or rom. Currently you should watch http://heartheecho.m.webs.com/site/...ile?url=http://heartheecho.webs.com/index.htm I don't believe there are any custom roms yet for the echo, but they are under development.

I have my Xoom rooted with the Tachi kernal and Moray rom installed. I can install custom themes, I have the cpu/gpu overclocked to run at 1.4ghz instead of only 1ghz, there are tons of benefits to rooting. I can pair a ps3 dualshock controller via bluetooth, with blueputdroid, you would be able to do that on echo as well.

I totally reccomend it, they are details and instructions on that site I mentioned. There are a bunch of benefits and its pretty low risk. Most likely a complete wipe of the phone is needed and there is always chances of getting bricked. The chances are minimal but just know before you start that there are risks.

Thanks for the information man. I havent decided whether I'm going to do it or not yet but the info does help with my decision.

Hey I totally forgot to ask. What does this do to my battery life? Im more so interested in freeing the annoying bloatware on here...i honestly dont need my phone to be randomly running maps and youtube and telenav and other such apps

It would help with battery life depending on what you did. You could underclock when the screen goes off to run the cpu slower when not in use. Freezing those running apps would help as well. DONT ever freeze the stock browser though. I did that once cause I was using opera, it just caused a whole bunch of problems, the other browsers don't support the dual screens well anyway.

I was thinking of freezing: telenav, sprint zone, sprint radio, sprintfootball, nascar, latitude, and jibe. would any of these cause some sort of problem?

You must first be rooted and have a custom kernal and/or rom to do the over/underclock. You can freeze apps after you root with an app called bloatfreezer, that does not require a custom kernal or rom.

Yeah I have my Xoom rooted and everything. Custom themes, kernals, roms, its pretty sweet. I say its perfect because I get way more abilities being rooted than staying stock.

Gotcha. Custom kernel a/o ROM - how hard is this, versus rooting for instance?

Ah, right. For some reason I read that as "(rooted Echo) + Xoom = Perfect Match ", which made less sense.

I would say the roms and kernals are easier cause you only need to flash it to phone. Rooting is gonna require a pc and entering commands with ADB. Check the site I posted about earlier for more info and instructions.
