I do not currently root, and I am just trying to get a feel for the rooting environment these days.

I used to load "OS leaks" on my BlackBerry because everyone who has owned a BlackBerry knows the OS is boring as hell - especially over 12 months ago. The problem with these freshly baked OSes was that some native, important features of the phone would not work in the new OS.

My Droid Inc is first and foremost a WORK phone; so, I need everything - including GPS & car dock - to work flawlessly. Business needs coming first, I have ignored the adventure of rooting my Droid Inc.

Now that the rooting community has matured since the early days of Android, I'd love to know:
1. Do you regularly go without the core features that came with your phone (GPS, your car dock, bluetooth, etc.). Or,
2. Have the ROM developers done a good job of ensuring everything works?

Thank you! :)

1. Yes.
2. Yes.

Just rooting by itself poses no danger to breaking any core functions of the phone. Merely grants the user root access.

Once you start flashing ROMs, it is possible that some ROMs have certain functions broken. These days almost all ROMs are perfectly stable. It really varies from one to the other, you just have to read up on a certain ROM to find out what works and what doesn't.

Different ROMs do different things, and only when you get to the more experimental ones do core features stop working. Now the question is, does your company or do you pay for your phone? If your company does, make sure that you won't get in trouble for messing with your phone.

GPS is a necessity for my job too, Car Dock is not though... I have run through many ROM's and have had no major issues. All I can say is once you root and have CWM, Make your first nandroid back up (so that way you can always go back to square one).... Once your first nandroid(backup) is done... hit up Pville's ROM's and MOD's and experiment... just please, READ READ READ.... I usually (depending on how many pages) read through a whole thread before flashing just to see what kind of problems if any other people have experience and how they resolved them too... I know one thing, your in the right place for any help you may need. ;) Goodluck and happy ROMing!!!

You need to use a stable rom, and you probably need a day or two to get everything set up the way you want, and make sure everything works correctly.

For instance, the first two weeks that i was flashing roms, i lost all my messages one day, and i had to spend alot of time figuring out how to set up my screens correctly after erasing everything ten times. But after a little bit of time, you are familiar with all the fixes or workarounds for things (like backing up what you need), and it stops being laborious to deal with small issues. But if you need to go to work TOMORROW with your phone ready to go, for example, i would not root tonight and just hope everyhting is straight.

It takes a little time at first. And you gotta read.
