Root'ed phone won't boot with outside ROM

I keep damaging my Incredible 2 phones -- I'm on my 3rd one via insurance -- the last one was a hardware problem. My previous phones were rooted and ran CM7 with no problem. And so this was my plan with this.

I unlocked the phone via the HTC Developer website and flashed ClockworkMod Recovery and installed SuperUser. I had the same SD Card from my previous phone and it still had the same CM7 zip file that I installed on my previous phone. I booted up into Recovery mode, did a factory reset, wiped cache, wiped Davlik Cache, and then installed CM7. The install in Recovery went fine, but the boot process won't get past the white HTC screen.

I tried a few variations, but never was able to get it past that point. I googled around and found a stock HTC rom that had root with it, I put that ROM in and it worked fine! I tried CM7 again -- no luck. I then tried Viper and that got the same result as CM7 -- can't get past the white screen. I, thankfully, did a backup in REcovery of my working HTC Stock rom so now I'm running again.

Anyone have an idea what is wrong?
