Rooted, then installed CleanRom 2.5, and now I can't tell if I have root access

Hey guys, so I rooted my HTC One (ATT) and then I went to install CleanRom 2.5, but it froze during installation and rebooted. On reboot it froze at the welcome screen and gave me the red message at the bottom about it being a developer version. After some trial and error I was able to get into recovery (Wil Wheaton), cleared my cache, and eventually managed to install CleanRom after a few freezes. During this process I couldnt get it to connect to my PC. I also tried to reboot with recovery and it said that would root my device, but when I selected yes it just went to that frozen htc welcome screen again.

It's working fine now, but I think I may have lost root access somehow along the way. When I try to run Superuser it says "The Superuser binary (su) must be updated. Please choose an installation method. Recovery mode is recommended." At this point I'm almost afraid to reboot my phone because dont want to get stuck at the loading screen again. When I'm in bootloader it says tampered and unlocked at the top.

So should I just cut my losses? I'm pretty new to this stuff so I'm kind of learning as I go here. Thanks in advance, first time doing this so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Nope - that's actually a pretty common error. You are rooted, but SuperUser is getting the error. What I would do is go to the XDA SuperSU page and download the zip then flash it in your recovery (now that you have clean rom installed, just restart the phone to recovery - it's easy!). This should take care of everything.

You're SO CLOSE! Don't give up now!

Dude, thanks so much. You have no idea how happy I am to hear that. For a few hours last night I thought I really screwed up! Should I make a backup in recovery before I do this?

You can also install an app called Root Checker (to check root, not in place of the other advice). Good luck. Being rooted is awesome.

Awesome, just downloaded it and it said I have root access but there was a conflict with another superuser app, so I think what actually happened was they were conflicting with one another. Hope that makes sense, still getting familiar with the lingo. Thanks again!

Yeah sometimes that happens when you have root then flash a pre rooted ROM that uses the other superuser app. In most cases it should take the place but in some they both remain. You can uninstall a superuser apk just like any other app and reload another. As long as the bootloader is unlocked which yours is you can sideload root without issue.

Also remember even tho you uninstall the app you will still have the binary installed. When you get the message the binary needs updating just use the normal way not recovery way and you'll be good. And now some of the root checker apps look for the apk and not the binary or they look in system/bin which now the binary is installed in system/.xbin

At this point I only have the following:

SuperSU - Seems to be working fine.
Tasker - Haven't created any profiles yet
Greenify - Working great.
WiFi Tether - Havent tried.
Titanium Backup - Still learning the ropes
ES File Explorer - Havent tried.

I was away for the weekend so I havent really had time to play around with it, but everything looks good from what I can tell. I'm trying to read up on this as much as I can, grateful for any tips/advice. Thanks again.

Little over my head but I think I took care of this correctly. I haven't gotten that message since. Thanks!
