ok folks, I'm now in the rooted club!!! oh yeah, oh yeah... Used the script found here and it worked like a charm on my Macbook:

R3L3As3Droot And 43V3R Root For The Bionic V2.1 - RootzWiki

soooo, what do folks recommend next?

I have verified the forever root script took, though it was missing a line, I added that in.

-- Get Titanium Backup Pro and run a backup?

-- Backup current ROM (how to do this? ClockworkMod?)

-- move to 5.7.893?

-- Custom ROM?

all of the above?

;)

I'm certainly no expert. But here's what I did, although I think #5-6 makes both 1 & 3 obsolete:

1. Forever Rooted
2. Backed up ROM with Clockwork Recovery
3. Installed 5.7.893
4. Backed up 5.7.893
5. Installed HIFT3R BASE ROM
6. Installed HIFT3R V2.3.1 (BLURRY IC3) TH3ORYPAX
7. Ran Powerboost Script from BLURRY IC3
8. Installed funky "Epic 3D Tunnel" live wallpaper just for the fun of it, and to make people who borrow my phone dizzy.

More or less 1-7 would be my recommendation as well :D
Love BLURRY IC3... Though since I use Launcher Pro and don't have any Moto widgets that I use I'm waiting for them to finish the D3BLURR3D --- Apparently now to be known as [P]URIFI3D Pak -- how sexy does that sound :) ?

ok I must be missing something - I can't get my Bionic to reboot into CWR. I downloaded ROM Manager (free version), tapped Flash Clockwork Recovery, it says it installed properly, then tapped Reboot into Recovery Mode, but my Bionic just reboots into regular mode.

Should I see Clockwork Recovery in my app drawer? Tried to reflash Clockwork Recovery on wifi, but same thing happens when I tap "Reboot into Recovery Mode" - it just reboots into normal mode.

Anyone have this issue? How to solve? Boot manually into recovery mode and run clockwork from there? Nope, that doesn't work either, I only get stock recovery, not Clockwork Recovery.

Help, please.

I think you need bootstrap anyway... I wouldn't use Rom Manager for this purpose to begin with. Just download Bionic Bootstrap from the market. When you open it hit the first button. Wait for "Success!" click ok, hit second button, will boot you right into CWR.

This is optional... but with Bootstrap, I recommend unchecking the "Always do same thing.." box when it asks you for SuperUser permissions. I would grant it but only when you are using it to get into CWR. The reason is that in Th3ory's ROM, once you run the Powerboost script an option in there will let you boot into CWR on every boot, which is useful, but it tends to conflict and not work right if you have Bootstrap working in the background with SU permissions. Just a note :)

ok, got Bootstrap, I'll try that, thanks.

more questions now - flashing a new ROM wipes all apps, sooooo... steps for above would be to flash the base, boot up, sigh of relief when all looks good, go into market, re-download Bootstrap, go back into CWM and flash the TPAX.. right?

LDub - I had to launch Bootstrap first to then launch CWR from ROM Manager. And once you install the base ROM, as you leave everything to settle in, market will re-download all your apps. So Bootstrap/ROM Manager will be back on your device.

Then you can use it to reboot into CWM to apply the Tpax

2def - "What is the benefit of booting into CWR on every boot?

Well after you flash the ROM and all your apps and stuff have been wiped, reboot and let it sit. Once its booted and your at the little android guy, I like to give it a good 5 minutes to sit untouched (recommended by th3ory), let the ROM settle in.

Then go through your set up, log in to your main google account and at the bottom there's 2 checked boxes saying it will restore your market apps, wifi settings, all that stuff. Leave them checked and hit ok, you'll see all your market apps start redownloading all on their own.

I like to wait a few minutes to let that finish at this point.

Then, as th3ory says in his OP, you can go ahead and set up all your apps, various accounts, etc. Once your all good, use bootstrap to reboot into CWR. Under Mounts and Storage, format /cache. Under advanced, wipe dalvik cache. Install from sd card -> The TPak of your choice, reboot. Good to go.

That first reboot after flashing the Tpak takes a bit longer because your phone is rebuilding a cache and dalvik. After that, smooth sailing :)

EDIT: Another note, all your apps will come back from the market but without data. If you used Titanium Backup to back up all your apps and data, then you can go under the Backup/Restore tab in TiBu and for certain apps its OK to click them, hit Restore, and hit Data only. Very useful for bringing back all your games' progress and stuff like that. BUT do NOT use TiBu to restore any data for system apps, because your system apps have all changed with the ROM and you'll screw stuff up. Try to get by with as little TiBu restoring as possible and things will always be smoother :)

A little more research reveals that locked Moto bootloader won't allow you to boot into CWR from ROM Manager, so must use Bionic Bootstrap.

Woohoo! Now running HIFT3R with ICS Tpak!!! Sweet...

Was I right in selecting option #4 in the powerboot script menu?

I couldn't find a good guide for what to actually do in powerboost. Everything said "follow the prompts", which of course there weren't any, just the menu.

I started doing them in order up until somewhere like #4 or #6, then stopped.

I don't remember what option 4 was specifically but I think I just followed them all through until reboot (obviously don't do #7 or whichever was Restore, lol that just undoes them all). There was a great youtube vid on it in one of the Bug threads that got taken down. Honestly its as simple as it looks though...
Hit 1 to create backup directory, then 2, Yes, 3, Yes, etc...

Keep note along the way after each step to see that there weren't any errors in the step. Step 6 or so was check mods and will let you know if it all worked correctly. Then reboot. Easy peezy :)

EDIT: Ldubs you're behind the curve though, you need to get on Purity now, lol. If you can live without blur (a good idea, mind you) you will love it. Plus just about all the Powerboost script stuff is baked into the ROM, so theirs only 1 option to run when you run it yourself, Unthrottle to speed up data. Everything else is installed and running behind the scenes, right off the bat!

Yeahhhh.. you don't need that. I let it do that because it seemed like a nice safe fallback in case I screw something up, but really you don't need it if you're not trying to edit codes and stuff on your own. I mean it can be annoying a little, not too bad tho. Its actually not even an option on the Purity version, its just built into the power menu "reboot recovery" is one thing you can choose.

yeah I think it's an option in Shifter also... so if I wanted to get rid of it, go back into the powerboost script, hit option 7, and start back from option 1 again?

Sounds right, thats what I would do.

EDIT: Actually start from 2, because 1 just creates backup directory which you'll have already :)

Well tried that and it still rebooted into cwm. Oh well.

Yeah that's how I felt, not that big a deal, comes in handy sometimes and other times, whatever. Small price to pay for the slickness of Th3ory lol

OK I think I'm going to flash purity tomw...I'm running zeam launcher now so don't need blur. Did they iron out the bugs for flashing it?
