I thought buying a Google Nexus 4 directly from Google would give me a Rooted phone? I'm using Orbot, I 'request root access', but get an mssg that the phone is not rooted nor in superuser mode? What's up with this?

That's because it isn't rooted. You have to root it yourself, Google doesn't do it for you.
It is a lot easier on the Nexus than it isn't on other phones though
