If you root your device can you still get OTA updates? Or would it require another root assuming its compatible with the current update? Somewhat of a noob at the rooting.

So if I root will I get auto updates

Or will I have to wait for someone to create rom, if I'm saying it right. Will I have to backup and all that first?

Once you are rooted either for a custom rom or kernel you will need to wait for the developer to include the OTA into the specific rom or kernel you are using. Taking the OTA with root could lead to problems, I know when I had an EVO people were bricking their phones that way.

You could always go back to stock and get the update while you wait for your specific rom/kernel to be updated.

I am rooted and have flashed a custom kernel but am still on the stock rom. Can I simply flash the stock kernel and be able to safely install OTA updates.

fastboot is the key

As long as you can still fastboot the phone and your computer recognizes it, you can fix ALMOST any software problem with this phone.

So, what I am saying is, give it a try. Worse case scenario, you may have to fastboot flash your system recovery etc, but there are threads and Google guides that get you on the right path.

Just to double check this question, I am stock, rooted, and considering flashing Netarchy's kernel for BLN and hopefully better battery. And right not my phone goes a 1.5 days on battery, so very happy

I'm somewhat hesitant for 2 reasons - my phone is running so great and do want ota's from Google not Sprint. I will stay stock rom at this point.

So, if I flash kernel, will it receive updates?
If I want to go back to stock, can I use Odin and the pda from Samsung DL 720, or can I just go to backup in CWM?

I come from flashing and playing with Epic, so actually enjoying a wonderful functioning phone without any maintenance, so very comfortable with Odin and capabilities, but not so much with fastboot, had a
heck of a time unlocking and rooting so would rather stick with backup or Odin if I decide to go back.

Thanks.

Hey all,

So, is there a definitive answer here? I successfully unlocked and rooted my NS4G using the method HERE it went perfectly....

I am not using a custom ROM, or Kernel or making any mods - i only rooted so i could take screen captures...So, I don't see any reason why I couldn't still do an OTA update. If it DOES un-root it automatically, then I would assume that I could just re-root again. All I am worried about is being ABLE to download and install the OTA updates when they are pushed through google/sprint.

Just triple checking,

Matt!

Matt I think you will be fine. At the most you might have to lock the device to actually install the OTA update and that is simple enough.

1. Boot into fastboot
2. Connect via adb
3. type in "fastboot oem lock"
4. Done...

Then afterward you would probably have to unlock and reinstall root but that is simple enough too....

This would be the worst case situation since you haven't changed or modded anything just gaining root access to take screen shots.
