I was looking through the forums and found some conflicting, confusing information about rooting and upgrading to the new OTA Froyo for the Incredible. For instance, as far as just upgrading to Froyo, I've seen one guide that said all you have to do is run the RUU, and another that said you have to extract the exe get some hboots stick em in your radios and a whole bunch of other wonderful stuff. I don't know if that guide was just for rooted users or what, but it's two completely different guides with two completely different set of instructions that's left me with no clue how to go about this.

I'd like to have a thread that makes things easy for people such as myself who are unrooted and want to apply the upgrade that are thinking about rooting. With that being said I don't mind updating this post provided someone is willing to make a guide explaining how to end up with a rooted OTA once they start rolling out. I wonder whether we should root now with unrevoked forever and apply the update, or root once a Froyo patch is made (unrevoked4?). If someone could explain the process of having a rooted 2.2, I'd really appreciate it. From what I've gathered it's root with unrevoked3, once that's done install uForever and then apply the 2.2 update. With S-OFF now set, you should have a rooted 2.2 Incredible, am I right?

I'd like to mention that, while unrevoked3 seems simple enough, uForever doesn't appear to be the same at first glance. The instructions on their page state, 'The update can be installed like any custom .zip file. Simply flash it from your custom recovery' - something which I have no idea how to do unless the unrevoked3 process is going to explain it. This is where I think a lot of people get confused (again keep in mind I haven't rooted yet so the unrevoked3 process could provide the answer to all these questions, I just haven't decided whether I actually want to root yet).

Hope I'm not being too much of a pest for you guys, but without a root method for the naked Froyo update, what's a step by step to make it happen?

I guess he wasn't the only one that didn't read the whole post.

Ok ok. I didn't mean it to be rude to you. But you gotta be honest, that was a clever response, if not exactly what you were looking for.

That aside, I think Qazme's indirect point was that, while there is a lot of information and it can get confusing, the answer to your request is that there actually is a broken down guide to root, and that guide is all of the documentation and resource links at unrevoked.com. I'll try to point you in the right direction.

First, if you're going to root, you don't need to worry about anything besides rooting the phone for the time being. No upgrading radios, no loading custom ROMs on your phone, etc. Go back to unrevoked.com, click on unrevoked3, and then click more info. Read about and understand this tool's use and application first, because if you don't do this, you won't be able to do unrevoked forever as the next step. I just used both tools this evening and forever'd my phone about 2 hours ago or so, and I used the unrevoked documentation to do it. If you're on a windows machine, you will need to install a USB driver for your phone before unrevoked3 will work, and there are instructions for those in a link. If you take everything step by step, it's not a hard process. Just eating an elephant one bite at a time.

Once you have unrevoked3 done, there is excellent documentation for unrevoked forever, which will appear as soon as you click it's name. Again, take time to read the steps. It took me a while to separate descriptive information from actions to perform, but both need to be understood so you know what to do and what results to expect.

I'll leave the rest of the drawn out stuff to the documentation. Let's assume you've rooted your phone and then run unrevoked forever to turn S-OFF. When you run the OTA upgrade, root will be temporarily removed, because the OTA file comes without that privilege. But the beauty of unrevoked forever is that, because it is a permanent patch outside of what is affected by the update, there is an image you can download and run in recovery on your phone to restore root.

I read a lot of threads in this forum, in addition to the unrevoked site, to learn about what to expect. Once you have rooted your phone, then you can decide if you want to load a custom ROM or stick with the OTA. Do the research on what interests you and you'll find all the info you need to do what you want.

Good luck!

Thanks for that Saiyajin. I think in Qazme's infinite wisdom he completely ignored the Froyo part, which made his attempt to humiliate me backfire by providing a 'let me Google that for you' link to something that would have actually locked me out of root (if I followed his link, I'd have a rooted 2.1 which would be lost when the OTA came over). Obviously that was not what I was asking. Hell it's in the title for Pete's sake, read people! :p

Lol wow dude. You have to root 2.1. That way you can flash 2.2. I see my 'infinite wisdom' to show you the way you ignored it. So let me try again.....

There are 4 million threads, websites, blogs, posts, twitters, and how-to's on THIS forum I and others have wrote to help people like you get the information you need to know. So basically try using google or even the search link above and find those posts so people like me and our 'infinite wisdom' don't have to keep repeating ourselves and cluttering up the forum.

If you followed my link all it showed you were links on how to root with unRevoked......basically you need to root 2.1. Flash a rooted 2.2 rom and your done. Of course you know that because you followed my link and read like most people do......

So no I didn't miss the Froyo part. Learn to read. As of right now there is no root method for the Froyo 2.2 OTA, of course if you read the links, once again, you would know there is an already rooted OTA I posted a link to in THIS forum. But then again you have to read before posting to know this.......

http://forum.androidcentral.com/htc...cks/30944-stock-rooted-froyo-ota-release.html

Now if you want the way to roll back to 2.1 stock to get the OTA I would help you but you know better I guess. And no s-off with the OTA does not equal you still having root. But I guess you already read that.

This is not remotely correct. S-off allows you to reflash a custom recovery. Then once you have a custom recovery you can put your phone into recovery mode and perform a root when a method is produced, which will be coming along shortly. It also give you the ability, once you have a custom recovery on there, to flash an already rooted 2.2 ROM. That I posted about earlier.....but then again I'm sure he read about it too.

Thanks, but had I followed your original post, I'd still end up with a phone that was locked out of root. Hence the phrase, 'infinite wisdom'.

This post shows that you still haven't read my original post, and as such I'll return the favor by no longer reading yours. I appreciate your effort, though.

Ok lemme clarify it even more for you...because obviously you have no clue what you are talking about. So I'll go down your post and answer you the way I didn't originally want to. Because after all some reading cures all this......

Depending on what ROM you are using and what mods you have done you may not have to do this at all. If you merely have a stock 2.1 ROM with nothing other than root you will still receive the OTA. However, once your phone installs the OTA you will lose root. That's how these things work.

I'd like to have a thread that makes things easy for people such as myself who are unrooted and want to apply the upgrade that are thinking about rooting. With that being said I don't mind updating this post provided someone is willing to make a guide explaining how to end up with a rooted OTA once they start rolling out.

Probably a good idea if there wasn't already several posts including one I've posted here already that covers this.....

I wonder whether we should root now with unrevoked forever and apply the update, or root once a Froyo patch is made (unrevoked4?).

If you actually read any of the posts people have been putting this would be self explanatory. UnRevoked forever does not give you root, it applies the status off for signature checking on the phone. So even if you did the s-off with unRevoked forever you still wouldn't have root on the OTA.

If someone could explain the process of having a rooted 2.2, I'd really appreciate it. From what I've gathered it's root with unrevoked3, once that's done install uForever and then apply the 2.2 update. With S-OFF now set, you should have a rooted 2.2 Incredible, am I right?

The only way right now to gain a rooted 2.2 OTA is to look at the post I made earlier. I'm sure you read it. It's a release 2.2 OTA pre-rooted. All you need to do is flash the ROM and you have it. unRevoked 3.1 is not known yet if it will root 2.2 and from what the Devs said if you want root on 2.2 you need to s-off the phone so you can flash a custom recovery so when the time comes they know how to root it you can do it. Of course I'm sure you have read the numerous posts about that already. So no you aren't right.

So basically what you are telling us is you haven't read any of the numerous posts about unRevoked or unRevoked forever. You aren't aware of how rooting works, what it does, how to perform it or anything else yet my link I gave to you 'locks you out of it'....dude for real you need to read BEFORE you brick your phone.

unRevoked 3.1 and unRevoked forever do two different things, have two different functions, and are ran / installed two different ways. Of course I'm sure you read this on the unRevoked page about what it does.....

unRevoked wiki page said:
unrevoked forever is a tool to set your Android phone's security level to S-OFF. The security level is a flag stored on the radio; when the flag is S-OFF, the bootloader (HBOOT) will no longer check the signatures of firmware images before flashing them. This allows custom firmware images to be uploaded, including unsigned boot, recovery, splash1, and hboot images (as well as official images that have been modified). When the system is S-OFF, the NAND flash memory protection is also reduced; this allows all partitions (including /system) to be written to while the operating system is booted.

Then of course you follow the VERY SIMPLE instructions on how to install it....

unRevoked Installation Instructions said:
To install unrevoked forever on your phone, perform the following steps.

1. If your phone does not already have a custom recovery, use unrevoked3 to root your phone.
The installation process cannot take place if the phone does not have a custom recovery installed.

2. Download the most recent ''unrevoked-forever.zip'' to a temporary location on your computer.
The update can be installed like any custom .zip file. Simply flash it from your custom recovery. Both Amon_RA and Clockworkmod Recoveries support custom .zip installs from the sdcard.

3. Either select the option to install a .zip from your SD card, or apply it as an update.zip as follows:
-Place the update.zip file into the root of your SD card. You can do this with adb with the command: adb push unrevoked-forever.zip /sdcard/update.zip

4.Reboot your phone into recovery mode. You can do this by removing your phone's battery, holding down the VOLUME DOWN button, and inserting the battery; at the menu, press VOLUME DOWN to highlight recovery, then press POWER to select it.

5.Select apply sdcard:update.zip from the menu.
6.Press VOLUME DOWN until Yes is highlighted, then select it.
7.Review the output to determine if there were any errors.

If messages beginning in E: appear, stop! If possible, join IRC for support.

8.Restart the phone normally, then reboot the phone into the bootloader. This can be done by holding VOLUME DOWN while powering the system up. Observe at the top that S-OFF appears.

Pretty hard to follow for some people, seems pretty clear to me. Of course if nobody has read anything about installing zip files with clockworkmod, or even know what clockworkmod is I can see how it would be confusing. Of course reading about it cures most of that.

Hope I'm not being too much of a pest for you guys, but without a root method for the naked Froyo update, what's a step by step to make it happen?

You weren't being a pest at first. If you would have taken the friendly nudge to do some reading about the subject before telling people they are wrong it would have helped. However in your ignorance you chose to ignore what information we are giving you, and I suspect you will do the same about this post. Your loss and when you have a bricked incredible I want you to think about it.

Now to finish this up the solution is EXTREMELY EASY to do. Read up. If you did you would already know there is no known root exploit for the phone on 2.2. So you will need to s-off your phone with unRevoked forever. But to do that you need to already have custom recovery on your phone, which means you need to run unRevoked 3.1 and root your phone while it's on 2.1. Then once you have those two things complete you have a choice to make. Either #1 install the OTA which can not be rooted right now, not even with unRevoked 3.1, or install an ALREADY ROOTED Froyo ROM which I posted about this morning in this very forum......

Yeah I'm leading you the wrong way.....learn to read.

Lol wow dude. You have to root 2.1. That way you can flash 2.2. I see my 'infinite wisdom' to show you the way you ignored it. So let me try again.....

This stock rooted 2.2 link is better than getting the ota because it retains root? am i right? Would this be the most stable Rom to go with for froyo? What would I give up if I went with a rom with no sense?

Yes basically. Right now it's the OTA but with root nothing more nothing less. As of right now it's the most stable as it's the same thing but with root. If you goto a ROM without sense there could be a lot of things missing or very little missing. At the absolute least you lose the rosie Sense ui launcher and the HTC widgets. At the most you lose a lot of things.

Personally the best suggestion, as Terry Master's says, I can give from my 'infinite wisdom', is to install the stock OTA thats rooted. Make a nandroid backup so you can always go back to it. Use it for awhile and if you decide to try a non-sense rom flash it and give it a whirl. If you don't like it, go into recovery and restore your nandroid back from the OTA rooted backup. Easy peasy....

OK, anyone with true self respect would admit that swallowing their pride and going against their own word may prove beneficial to others. We all make mistakes. So I retract my previous statement that I'm not going to respond to your post considering the 9,000 page long essay you just wrote me. I can safely say that you either keep missing it, or english is not your primary language because despite you breaking things up into segments it appears as if you still haven't read my post. Let me break this down for you.

Me - "How do you root your phone so when the 2.2 OTA comes out you can still root it?"
You - "Let me Google that for you: 'how to root android 2.1', derp!"
Me - "Right, except that only answers half my question."
You - "Unless you scrolled down and searched through 9 pages of results and figured out you needed unrevoked forever, dumbass..."

See the problem? You only answered half my question and if you actually read what I posted, you would've seen that I already knew:

From what I've gathered it's root with unrevoked3, once that's done install uForever and then apply the 2.2 update.

Not only that, but had you read the first two sentences of my OP instead of skimming through it, you would have seen my example that showed how guides conflict each other, because if you did I'm pretty sure you wouldn't have used the, 'there's 4 million guides out there that show you how to do this' defense. But I'm the one that needs to learn how to read, not you, right? So if you read it and understood it, but still used that as an argument...

Bottom line dude, you had to be a wise *** about it, and you were wrong. Now you've got your head tucked between your legs trying to find something else to blame. It happens. Next time, try not to undermine people about it.
