My understanding is that their are a couple of different ways to root. The simplest root method is to use the Weaksauce exploit. Go to XDA Developers site. Download and install Weaksauce app. Go to Google Play and install SuperSU app and you're good to go. If you go this route, evrytime you reboot your phone, it will take a minute extra for re-root your phone. But using Weaksauce makes it very easy to return to stock if you have a need to do so. Just uninstall SuperSU and Weaksauce then reboot and you are back to stock.

This sounds very effective for those of us who have not done this before or just want root to get a workaround for the KK microSD issue.
Anyone comment on how this process worked for them?
I'm about to buy the M8 and getting around the KK issue is my last hurdle before I plunk down my unlocked $700.

From what I understand, Weaksauce only works on Verizon phones.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that. Weaksauce is for Verizon devices only. Sorry. Weaksauce worked great for me. Really easy compared to what I had to do with my older Androids. But I am on Verizon.

I just posted a new thread in the Rooting and ROM section with Step-by-Step instructions on how to use Weaksauce to Root the Verizon HTC One M8.
