Rooting Mesmerize with z4root?

So I have a Mesmerize from US Cellular, it is my first smartphone. I have no past experience. I've heard that z4root is the easiest way to root the Mesmerize. Is that true? If I did use it, would the unroot feature be able to unroot the phone? And I have Android 2.1. When US Cellular deploys the OTA 2.2 update, will that work if the phone is rooted? And what would be the best way to back up my phone before I try a root? I have no idea about how to go about it really.

My advice is to not root your phone at all. I speak from experience here. I have rooted my last 2 captivates on VZW and both cases have ended bad for me. I read that to use the Titanium backup you need to have a rooted phone. So, I rooted the captivate to use the titanium backup in order to backup my hundred or so apps before running the 2.2 froyo ROMs that are on XDA. It is extremely tedious and inconvenient to have a rooted phone. Whenever you play games or use apps with ad banners (practically all of them now), anytime you accidentally hit the ad banner which is right next to your user buttons that program will install. Instead of a non rooted phone the malicious programs from ad banners will be blocked.
Oh, and yes a rooted phone cannot receive any OTA firmware updates. You have to revert to the acceptable ROM before you will receive the OTA update. More of a pain than it's worth..really!

Rooting definitely isn't for everyone. z4Root is just fine for rooting purposes. Personally, I've rooted every phone I've had and never had a single problem related to rooting. As for OTA firmware updates, yes you have to unroot to get them, but how often do they come out and how far in advance do you know about them? It's not an issue.

The point is, rooting is a decision that each person makes on their own based on the needs and desires they have for what they want to do with the phone that they own. Personally, I want to feel like I own the phone that I bought, not like I'm just borrowing or renting it from the company that I get my service from. And yes, rooting does void your warranty, but just like the OTA, unroot it and reflash the stock firmware and back comes the warranty.

My opinion is that if someone wants a smart phone, they should have just that... a SMART phone, not some dumbed down, hobbled version of that smart phone.

It is possible to root the Mesmerize with z4root, because it is a Galaxy S device, but since this is your first smartphone, I would strongly advise that you do not root.

I rooted my mesmerize with the z4root and worked like a champ!! Took only a couple minutes, now trying to figure out the whole backup process. Not getting to far.

Just download Titanium Backup...go ahead and pay for the paid version. You can freeze apps (make them disappear with out uninstalling them), uninstall apps and backup apps. This will be great when you do a factory reset and have to install all your apps again.

I have used Z4ROOT with no problems either and to back up apps the easiest way is AppBrain which syncs the apps you have with your Gmail account you use for your phone/market anyway. Worth looking into if your messing with your phone.

If you run across any problems here is the link to recover to stock US Cellular Mesmerize OS.

2shared - download Samsung_i500_Mesmerize_DI14.zip

Everything you need should be included!

Unrooting

I am unrooting my phone and flashing back to the stock ROM because I put the leaked 2.2 ROM on. Can I just use ODIN again for this factory OS copy I downloaded about or is there something else?
