Rooting OTA 2.2?

So since all the people who already have rooted can load the OTA does that in any way mean that the OTA itself can still be rooted?

I have yet to root simply for the fact that I wanted to get the official OTA and that all my applications will be deleted and that I don't want to have to wipe my SD card to load custom ROMs (am I correct in that assumption?).

However I may be looking into root after 2.2 OTA. Is it possible or is that not clear yet?

There is a post on the main page that shows the Evo 2.2 version has been rooted. That said, there are some subtle differences between the Evo software and the Inc software, so there's no guarantee that the same method will work. It's likely, but not guaranteed. So first go to unrevoked.com, and read the info for both unrevoked 3 and unrevoked forever. If you choose to root, this will guide you with everything you need to make it happen. Just understand there is a LOT of detail in there. It makes sense, but you can't just gloss over it. You have to READ IT CAREFULLY before you proceed.

In short, if you want to root, you need to run both unrevoked tools BEFORE you install the OTA file that you will download to your phone. The OTA for 2.2 has the potential to plug the hole that was used to allow unrevoked 3 to root the phone in the first place. If that happens, and you install the update losing the ability to run unrevoked 3, you won't be able to root the phone until 2.2 is cracked. However, if you run unrevoked 3 (first) and unrevoked forever(second) before the update, you will be able to install the official OTA update, and then use an image the unrevoked team has provided to re-root your phone.

I just forever'd my phone about an hour ago, so I've not installed any custom roms, so I can't comment on how to do that yet. Bound to be my next step. Check out Skyraider and Cyanogen ROMs to see what would suit you, if you root your Inc. Then you've got at least 3 options, including the OTA if that's what you want.

There is a lot of information already out there on this subject. Please search and read, read, read.

I used unrevoked 3 yesterday. Will i still recieve the 2.2 OTA? or do i need to unroot and return my phone to stock?

I could care less about having rooted. I was just bored. I just want to make sure i get the update.

Or just root your phone and install the already rooted OTA. Then you don't have to wait on it to show up on your phone too.....

If you just unRevoked 3.1 the phone, meaning all you did was get root, then you will still receive the OTA. Now if you started changing things like the radio or ROMs etc then you may not. But if all you did was root you will still get it. Just be aware once you get the official OTA you will lose root.

Yea all i did was use unrevoked 3.1. I didnt change anything all i did was install incredilight and wireless tether...but i couldnt get the tether to work so i uninstalled it.

I was not looking forward to having to unroot and wipe my phone. so I hope the OTA comes soon so i can get 2.2 officially.

Well you won't have to unroot and all that. Just keep in mind if you do the OTA update you will lose root, and any apps, like incredilight, won't work. Then again the offical OTA has a flashlight app from HTC that doesn't require root ;)

Haha this is exactly what I did too. Only I found some instructions on how to get the wireless tether to work. It's actually kinda convenient..

Thank you for the info, Qazme. I also assume that the only way to get free wifi tether is to be rooted?

Actually yes and no. There are articles out there telling you how to use the 3G hotspot feature for free. Just a matter of reconfiguring the settings. And it works. Myself I always want root, I paid for the phone, it's mine, I want to use it how I want.
