I have installed Stickmount so that I can access my usb flash drives, but it says I need to be rooted.
Reading (briefly) through the guides it seems this will wipe all the data on the Nexus? If so, however easy is it to backup all the data I have currently installed, and what tools do I need? Using WinXP if that makes any difference.

I've seen people say that "if you need to ask these questions then maybe rooting is not for you", but if thisis the only way to actually use the flash drives...

Mainly music and apps, but also some music and document files that I no longer have access to after a HD death (that timing sucked!)

Pretty new to the whole app thing. I assume I can just reload them (especially the paid for ones), but I want to be safe rather than sorry.

Use something like Wug's Toolkit or the Nexus Toolkit to back all of your stuff up prior to unlocking. Unlocking will clean house, SD card included. If you want that stuff, you either need to (1) use one of those kits to back it up, or (2) manually back them up by dragging and dropping them using your computer.

When you setup a newly unlocked/rooted/or flashed device, you will be prompted to restore your apps from your Google account. All apps that you had will download. If they don't, find the my apps tab in the Play Store and start manually downloading.

Yeah - take your time, read my Kraken guide, and ask any and all questions that you may have before getting started :).

D's guide is awesome, btw.

The only data you'll lose would be app data (game saves and such). Wug's Tool Kit might be able to back it up, but I haven't tested it so I can't say for sure.
