rooting the optimus S

what are the benefits of rooting this phone?

Anything's possible. Simple answer: yes. You may or may not need to revert to software version V9

Reverting is totally not needed anymore because we have Gingerbreak now. It's super simple as long as you follow directions.

There is a sticky called "Rooting the LG Optimus S with software version LS670ZVD" in the "LG Optimus S Rooting, ROMs, and Hacks" portion of the forum.

I did it for a much fast/responsive phone without all the bloat and to install Debian Linux.
Rooting the Optimus opens big doors.

so rooting ZVD version is will be same process for MVD?
I will be upgrading my sd card to 16gig, should i wait to get the card to do this?

I know rooting voids the warranty, but I do shell out monthly for sprint's protection plan. if I were to root and something was to happen to the phone to warrant repair, could I root and go back to stock before I take in it in to a sprint store? would they have any way of really knowing?

They are one in the same. You are prob looking at your Baseband version, while others are talking about the SW Version. They are the same.

MVD = ZVD

MVD is baseband

ZVD is SW Version

You can root your phone and always unroot it. If you are only going to ROOT then its SUPER EASY to return to stock. If you use Gingerbreak to Root, you can keep Gingerbreak.apk on your Droid and when you need to run it again and tell it to UNROOT.

Then you can bring it into you local handy sprint store to replace it if needed or repair it if needed.

Try this way, otherwise Gingerbreak is a full proof method.

it does, thanks! though I was going to install a custom rom eventually so I imagine that complicates things somewhat. but I've never rooted before so I'm doing this in baby steps, ha.

Custom Recovery and ROM adds another few steps to bring it back to stock, but is super easy.

There is a great tool, OSCC by drew. This will alow you to flash back simply to stock recovery after you return your ROM back to stock.

All is possible and there are tons of peeps willing to help out

but I just searched my sd for the gingerbreak.apk and I don't have it on there? but I did use gingerbreak to root, as per the stickied thread's instructions. if it put it on my droid, would it make it easier to ever unroot later on down the road?
