Hey guys haven't posted in a while but I'm ready to root. My pc sux won't hold a usb connection for some reason. Anyway I'm gonna have a buddy do it. I saw some news that VZW was going to change for teether whether rooted or not. Has this been the case and what are you guys using to tether for free.

I am buying a xoom next week and I don't believe its fair to charge me for internet on that separate from my phone which is the same. Thanks guys

Thank you. I used to be so caught up when I had an og Droid but the thunderbolt is pretty sweet out of the box.

As you reported its a separate device why is it unfair that they charge you for internet on a totally different device as you point out is separate from device? They are separate and not the same...

Yeah, the tether apps do seem to work. For what it's worth, I own a Galaxy 10.1 (which you may want to look at if you're considering the Xoom), and I had kinda went through the same thought process.

When I bought it, the 4G version wasn't out yet...and wasn't gonna be out for a few weeks. Not too concerned about storage, so I planned on getting a 16GB version. I figured the Wifi only version was $30 cheaper (retail) and wouldn't require dedicated monthly data charge and contract, plus as long as I have my Thunderbolt, I can always just tether my tab to it. Seemed like an easy decision.

For the record, I have the legit $30/month mobile hotspot plan added to my phone at this time. Before they started charging for it, however, I used both the Verizon hotspot feature as well as some of the root apps just to test. I had no problem getting it to work, but I have heard cases of people having problems/issues getting the tab to tether on certain ROM or with certain apps.

The other thing is that we may speculate all we want, but the fact is that no here really knows whether or not Verizon will at some point have the ability and/or motivation to shut down tethering using the known root apps. Maybe they will, maybe they won't...maybe they can't? (although trust me, if they get suspicious, they can probably figure out that you are).

I don't really want to get into it...but I'm not sure why it wouldn't be "fair". I hate having to pay a fortune for data as much as the next guy, but it's not like the contract with Verizon that you have for your cell phone should entitle you to data for "every mobile device you own"

My point is that it right now, if you wanted to tether your tab it should work, but you should be willing to accept the fact that (a) you may not be able to in the future without paying for it and that (b) you are violating your TOS if you choose to do it.

In your case I agree with your views because you have the Mobile Hotspot on your account already but when a user is using methods to get it for free I have a different view of things because I don't care what agreement is made that using the feature without paying is costing honest users more and I don't see that as far.

I don't think its fair but I understand its business. If they did a deal for 45 a month to teether from my 4g that would seem fair to me. Mostly because I don't need full time internet on a tab. Most I use now on my phone is five gigs a month so I don't think I should have to pay for the same internet. I view it as a cable modem u don't pay extra for every device. But like I said I get it. Plus I have two smart phones on my plan I don't need to have three data plans since my wife only used a gig a month if that.

But the have a 30.00 a month 4G plan for users with unlimited data plan.

Yeah I have 4g unlimited right now. With a plan with four phones two smart. I'm was trying to avoid a 250 bill for devices. I really only needed the tab to stream Sunday ticket to go hbo to go every other Sunday. I understand that rooting and teethering may cause VZW to charge me. What roms are people running that have a mobile hotspot or a wireless teether built in?

Just a heads up...the specific tasks you plan to use tethering for are data-intensive applications. I'm not saying Verizon will take any action, but if they were going to, that is specifically the type of data usage they'd be looking to stop.

I see your point about the data usage but what do you think is the better option tablet with data plan vs mobile hotspot.

Oh god, here we go again.

Think about it a minute, and I'm sure you can guess why people think its unfair . . .no need to repeat your Verizon apologist viewpoint in every post.

I am a business minding user and I view it from both angles and I just understand what adding a new feature and paying to develop and put into effect, so many keep acting like added a upgrade to the network is simply like walking into a room and flip a switch. The company invest a lot of money into the network to give the customer the features that they want or need and then to have a customer choose to show their gratitude by just saying OK now give it to me free.

This has turned into a gimme world, I gave you money for one thing and because of that you owe me everything you release from this point and I expect it at no cost... Some areas have plans that charge 50 dollars for a few megs of data but people complain about a 30.00 unlimited plan for a feature they they are using.

In my opinion rational thinking just doesn't exist and the line of right and wrong is so blurred that users cant separate the difference.

I have watched developers spend days and weeks working on a ROM and release it to a community at no cost and then have the first post of the thread say "This is broke, fix it now" not thinking that it was given free eventho the poster has to pay for hosting the files to allow you to have them, and lord forbid they donate a dollar and now the developer is expected to answer every situation that user has.... Unbelievable....

Oh well, my rant is over :) , just had to get it off my chest.

I know what you r saying wildman. By no means am I holding my hand out for freebies. Just looking for a viable reasonable solution to solve a problem. I just picked up some touchpads hoping to port 3.0 to them. So I understand mobile hotspot has a gb cap even if I have the 30$ unlimited plan on top?

You could really argue the same thing about text messaging via google voice or being able to access to netflix via your HTC Thunderbolt.

The marginal cost of adding tethering to the average customer is nothing. . .and that is well documented. Tethering is just a way for verizon to slice the data and charge you more.

Now I'm a businessman myself, but when it comes to monopolies charging 1,000 dollars per megabyte (texting) or charging for how i use my data, that is where i get annoyed.

I don't appreciate companies lying (or misleading) its consumers. If Verizon was concerned about bandwidth usage then it would throttle during peak periods. . .not things like tethering or megabyte caps. I mean damn, they even want me to pay to get the City of the person I'm calling?

This is monopoly 101. The way to maximize profit is to slice and dice your monopoly 100 ways until you get every quarter. We should revolt, we should protest, and we should support the introduction of true competitors / free market.

In a free market, tethering is dead in the water. I don't support paying for optional services that are purely a result of a companies monopolistic position.

Honestly, especially given the amount I use it, my plan would be to try to use wifi tether as long as possible, and if Verizon took away access, I'd either bite the bullet and pay for it, or just go without mobile data on my tablet. Even if you do end up paying for mobile hotspot for your TB, it still works out to the same monthly $$$ as buying a 4G tab...so it was a no-brainer for me.

Would the WiFi teether app work in a tab. What isvthe diff between ad hoc
